We had the good fortune of connecting with Jameill Showers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jameill, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe risk is a necessary step in success. There is definitely a time and place for it but at some point you are going to have to take a risk in order to get where you want to go. For me, I would have never made it to the NFL had I not taken that leap of faith to transfer to the University of Texas at El Paso. After doing that, the Lord began to open doors for me. I started to see “risk” as the necessary step to success. I am currently taking a risk getting into Real Estate, becoming fully responsible for my income, with a family of four. There is just something about that “back to the wall” feeling that pushes people out of their comfort zone.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am currently in Real Estate. I am just getting started so I am excited for the journey ahead. I am a people person so it brings a lot of fulfillment just getting to take people to lunch or meeting up for coffee and just catching up. At first I got into Medical Device Sales for 2.5 years after Football. That career was a good learning experience but I knew it wasn’t a long term solution. I fought a lot of limiting beliefs and self doubt during that time but came out with a decent understanding of the real world and how to operate in it. I didn’t realize how spoiled I was as an athlete and how little I knew about life.
The main thing I would want to know about my story and my brand is that I pride myself on doing the right thing and doing it well. It doesn’t happen all the time but shooting for that as a goal will take you a long ways.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Golf will be our thing. We will also pretend funds are unlimited. We would have to get a round in at the Cowboys Golf Club, Vaquero Golf Club, Glenn Eagles, and PGA Frisco. Places to eat would have to include Nick and Sam’s, Wabi House, Pecan Lodge, and honestly Canes (don’t judge us). I’m not a big socialite so we would probably hang out at Cowboy’s Club a couple nights and the rest just get the kids together and hit some local parks to wear them out!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Where do I start?! My family has always supported me like no other. In times of self doubt, I could always go to my parents and my wife for a pick me up whether I wanted it or not! They always made me feel confident in my gifts and abilities.
Bobby Stroupe changed the game for me in terms of training. The training and coaching he provided allowed me to blow my ProDays out of the water. Brad Frazier, my quarterback coach, also helped me to impress scouts during the on-field drills by working with me during the offseason.
Lastly will be to Kecia McKenzie, she is the head PT and Co-Owner of Built4It Athletics in Prosper, Tx. My third year with the Cowboys I tore my ACL and Kecia helped me come back faster than expected and better than before.
