Meet Terrie Joseph | DJ, Voice Over Artist & Dance Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Terrie Joseph and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Terrie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was finding something to do that would generate great income, be something that I enjoy doing and be flexible enough so that I could be at home with my young children.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I do 3 wonderful, creative things.
1. I teach and choreograph at a dance studio in Montclair, NJ called Beyond the Boogie Dance Company. I began dancing at the age of 6 and danced professionally for quite a few years. I formally danced for MISL, NHL and NBA professional sports teams between 2007 and 2012. Currently at the studio I teach Dance fitness for Adults and Ballet for tweens. I also choreograph dances for competitions and recitals. I really enjoy working with them, it keeps dance alive for me, even though I’m no longer performing professionally.
2. Dj Terr IT Up
I began to DJ in December of 2020. I had a keen love of music due to my beginnings as a dancer. Then after sometime , Fall of 2022 I linked with my cousin David who also DJ’s and he became a mentor for me in this field. Not only did he show me the ropes, he also brought me out in the field and helped me to see what to expect. Then this really awesome opportunity came around for me to DJ at this Getaway holiday weekend in Haiti. My husband was a curator for Island Dreams weekend by Avivaa Enterprises and I was offered to be featured as one of the DJ’s with some others on the lineup. It was incredible. I was nervous that it was my first official gig. But I was so grateful for the opportunity. Not only did it teach me alot, but it also opened the door for me to receive 3 additional gigs between March and June of 2023.
3. Voice Over Artist
I began looking into voiceover first in 2018 when I was getting ready to have my 1st child. It was super important to me to try and find a lucrative gig, that was flexible, I could do from home and was still in the entertainment realm which I hold dear and true to me. I did little research took a few courses here and there and then I had a huge halt during covid. Then in September of 2022 I came upon Our voice on demand and I found a community that helped encourage those who were wanting to pursue a career in VO. I signed up for some courses and also began one on one coaching. I am now booking gigs and woring from home. My goal is to also build my website so I can begin to book directly.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Northern, NJ so spots that I would recommend are :
1.Tops Diner in Kearny, NJ! Their food, drinks, desserts….everything is just amazing. Also with their newly renovated establishment, you just forget your at a “diner”.
2. American Dream Mall in East Rutherford. it’s a MEGA mall. Besides wonderful choices of shopping both everyday and luxury, they also have really fun attractions and restaurants. Water parks, amusement parks, laser tag, a museum, an aquarium, legoland, an ice skating rink, a ski resort and I’m sure there are other things i’m missing. It’s really cool!
3. NJPAC
I’m a lover of the arts so I would definitely bring my guests to see something at NJPAC ( New Jersey Performing Arts Center) Newark, NJ. It’s been there since 1997 and it has a wonderful line up every year.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I totally agree that my success is most definitely in part to the support and encouragement of some very important people in my life! Therefore, I would love to shoutout my Dad, Mom, Aunt Nicki, Aunt Es and gran for always giving true encouraging words and logic behind it. My husband Fred, for being understanding and encouraging through all of my stops, starts and restarts. My cousin David for taking the time out to show me the ropes in the DJ world and letting me know that I’ve got what it takes. My VO coach Aurelia, for showing me how life and VO go hand in hand. My bestie Azriel, for keeping me focused on the goals that I drag her ear to the ground about lol. Lastly, my beautiful girls, their existence alone motivates me….I want to give them so much and I have to make it happen.
