We had the good fortune of connecting with Darby Ross and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Darby, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I contemplate risk, my primary consideration is the potential positive impact on those affected by the success of my team’s endeavors. I firmly believe that the disappointment caused by not attempting something outweighs the risks involved. My central focus lies on individuals – be they customers, stakeholders, end-users, or even my own family, friends, and children. I have always cheered for the underrepresented and underutilized. Taking well calculated risks is just apart of the road to success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m the founder of Reformium Technologies, an educational learning management system designed specifically for individuals impacted by incarceration. What truly sets us apart is our ability to deploy cutting-edge technology at a more accessible price point, combined with an unparalleled commitment to customer service. We address niche areas within the criminal justice system that often go overlooked by other companies.

As a member of the historically underrepresented Black Community in this industry, we bring a unique perspective and a deeper understanding of the goals, aspirations, and life journeys of those who have experienced incarceration.

Navigating a field predominantly dominated by white men, including judges, correctional officers, and police officers, has certainly come with its challenges. At times, it’s felt akin to surviving in a battle. Yet, this underscores the importance of taking bold risks. To truly drive meaningful prison and justice reform, we must be willing to confront formidable challenges through disruptive, both for-profit and non-profit, approaches.

One invaluable lesson I’ve learned is to never engage in something you don’t thoroughly comprehend. Understanding the underlying framework is paramount. Additionally, I’ve come to realize that prioritizing the people we aim to impact, as well as our stakeholders, takes precedence over all else. Cultivating a robust network has also been instrumental in our journey.

Ultimately, Reformium Technologies is not just a brand; it’s a testament to our unwavering commitment to effecting positive change within the criminal justice system. We’re dedicated to breaking down barriers, advancing inclusivity, and creating opportunities for individuals who are often overlooked. This is our mission, our passion, and our legacy.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am big on thoughtfulness and quality time so if my best friend was in town, I would do the following with them. I would pick them up from the airport and take them out to eat at a upscale Mexican restaurant or a steakhouse I recommend. I would show them a few places I’ve been wanting to try from Instagram and let them decide where we go. I would them decide. I would take them to my favorite parks that I visit with my family and to major tourist attractions Dallas has to offer. I enjoy art museums so I would take them to visit the Dallas Museum of Art and Dallas Contemporary. Besides this, we would most likely hit a few clubs to enjoy Dallas nightlife. Deep Ellum is always nice!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without a doubt, I owe my deepest gratitude to God. He’s been the unwavering force behind every milestone I’ve achieved. During moments of introspection and transition, He granted me the solitude I needed to recalibrate and forge a new path. Through the wisdom of my mother and the strength of my father, I was nurtured towards a purpose-driven life from an early age. His divine protection shielded me from harm, ensuring I stand here today, poised to fulfill my calling. The Most High blessed me with a devoted wife and three incredible children, who are poised to carry our legacy forward. Additionally, I’m indebted to my mentors, advisors, and teammates; together, we work towards goals that not only advance His kingdom and Will, but also amplify our collective impact.
