We had the good fortune of connecting with Richard Capp and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Richard, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In 2008, I was 28 years old, broke and working a job that didn’t inspire me. Bryce, my younger brother, started doing some graphic design as a freelancer and we decided he needed some help with sales and accounting. I probably didn’t give it much thought. We were young and naïve but it made sense to team up and just start!!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Milton & King manufactures wallcoverings for both domestic and commercial projects. Our goal was to modernize an age old industry and make luxury designer wallpapers affordable and available to everyone. We started in Australia, expanded to the United States and are integrating into the UK & Europe. We ship our products all over the world. Beautiful home interiors are becoming more accessible and I’d like to think we are a part of helping make that happen. Aside from the product, I always want Milton & King to represent a small family business ethic and approach in understanding the importance of our customers and treating them like local valued neighbors, even if they are across the country or on the other side of the world. We deal honestly, transparently and in good faith and do our best to be clear and communicative. When you hop on our online chat or call us up, you won’t get a bot. You’re going to get a real person who understands the importance of your project.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, we’re relatively new to the Dallas area, having only lived here for just over a year. In that time, though, I’ve learned that Dallas has so much to offer. If I had friends that were coming for trip, I think I might first take them to my nearly daily feed at Bites & Beats for tacos. They started out as a food truck and now have a place not far from Milton & King. Then we might have to pick out a pair of boots from Tecova’s in Dallas before we take the obligatory drive to the Stockyards in Fort Worth so we can visit Billy Bob’s honky tonk. Then for something a bit more low key, I’d suggest visiting White Rock Lake which is great for walking/hiking, fishing or just relaxing. Al Biernat’s is a must for a great steak and they even have our wallpaper in the women’s bathroom. We’ll definitely need to attend either Texas Rangers baseball, Dallas Stars hockey or Dallas Cowboys football game depending on the time of year. An excellent margarita can be found at Mexican Sugar as well as the best pork chop I’ve ever had. Finally, the Dallas Arboretum is beautiful and there is some great BBQ across the street at Smokey Rose.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think the name of the business pretty much spells it out. Milton & King come from the middle names of my parents. I spent my childhood on a family farm in rural NSW, Australia. The middle brother of three boys, I think we were very lucky to have parents who really lead by example. Dad knew how to do things, was physically fit and mechanically capable and if he didn’t know how to do something, he took the time to work it out. I can still hear him say “I need to think about it, let’s go and have a cuppa tea”. You are a product of your surroundings. Whilst I don’t share my dad’s love of tea, I do think that ability to figure things out rubbed off. But as we grow, our continued success is attributable more and more to our superb staff that keep things moving and our customers that spread the word and share with the world the results of their beautiful wallpaper installations. The more success we have, the more shoutouts that we have to give.
