We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Tieu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The idea of being a realtor was something I’ve always envisioned, but never took the action to pursue it earlier in my career. I always had this drive and an extroverted personality when it came to anything real estate, interior design, and even business related. One of my favorite shows is Shark Tank, and I have watched every single episode and even rewatched some of them, hoping one day I would take the step to start my own business and become a realtor. When my family and I were in the process of finding a house to move to when I was in 10th grade, I naturally took the initiative, found the realtor, compiled a list of homes as if I were a realtor, and dove in headfirst. During this time, I was introduced to HGTV, and I religiously watched many shows on there like house hunters, property brothers, love it or list it, fixer-upper, etc. This was when I started finding my passions in interior design and real estate. When it came to when I moved to DFW from Oklahoma City, I started the house-hunting journey myself, and during that time, I fell in love with the whole home-buying process. This time it was different. One of my friends recommended her realtor, and this gave me a different perspective because she was a part-time realtor. I didn’t know of the option of being a realtor on the side while pursuing a full-time job was a thing. This idea was really intriguing to me, as I would still have income flowing while being able to pursue my passions on the side. With that, I decided to go forth with getting my real estate license, and I am now a licensed real estate agent while still pursuing my full time job in software.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of the most exciting things I’ve encountered and had the opportunity to do was be in my first commercial shoot. I personally have always thought diversity in media was important, but was never confident in my acting abilities to ever be the one to represent my community. I never had any formal training in acting, but the thought of it made me happy. One of my friends sent me a listing for a commercial shoot, and I decided to give it a go and apply. My mentality was always “just do it” for almost everything, because in these situations you really have nothing to lose. I went with the process and surprisingly was chosen to act as a principal/background actor for a Chili’s commercial. I learned a lot through being in it, such as being as specific as possible of what clothing to wear, bring backups in case they do not like the fit, learning to improvise on the spot in case they decide to go with a different route, etc. I met great people on set and realized that acting on the spot is something that is way outside my comfort zone, but is very satisfying when it feels right. From this experience, I would love to get into more acting gigs, because it is one of the ways I can express myself and really be myself.
