We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Boutwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsea, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My business was started out of 100% necessity. My husband & I were both employed full-time with Whole Foods Market when we were forced to go on a Leave of Absence when our son developed a brain tumor and required around the clock care and extensive treatment.

We both went on LOA starting in August 2023. Both of our LOA’s were unpaid, so we had to figure something out as far as income. So I did what I do best when I get in a tough spot, I figured it out. Hallows Eve Apothecary was born. With our very last paychecks we focused on buying inventory and the supplied needed to start going to outdoor markets in the DFW area, and the rest is history. In December 2023 my LOA time expired and I was required to come back to Whole Foods. Our son was not in any position to be without us yet, so, I resigned from my management position at Whole Foods. And in January my husband did the same because of how well our business was doing. We were comfortably able to stay home and do what was required of us here to help our son on his healing journey.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As I already mentioned, we got where we are today because of necessity. But that still came with the usual new business challenges, startup costs, managing inventory, managing our work-life balance, etc. I am very excited about the success we have achieved in such a short amount of time. I am very proud of the regular customer base we have built that regularly orders on our website, or visits us at markets.

We got to where we are today because I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I have had so many startups I have lost count. From making digital art prints, to wood signs, hand stamped jewelry, false eyelashes, and more. None of those felt right, but, Hallows Eve Apothecary, feels right. I’ve always wanted to work for myself, live by my own rules, and have something to show for it at the end of the day…now that I am doing just that I am very thankful I bet on myself and didn’t give up.


If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m not doing to list any big name stores, chain restaurants, or malls to go to or anything like that. I would 100% take my best friend to the Outdoor Market scene. I’ve met some of the most amazing people working at these markets.

Some of the markets we attend regularly are:

The Underground Market, ran by Victoria & Chase. This market is held every Saturday and Sunday on Lowest Greenville in Dallas. There is everything at this Market. From our stuff, to chips and salsa, pressed flower art, hot sauce, some of the most beautiful gold jewelry, to skateboards and so so much more. Chase & Victoria are also some of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

Every Witch Way Denton, ran by Liz, Natalie, & Cassie. This market is held in Denton in the fall and spring, once a month. This market is the market for all things metaphysical. The vibes at this market are unmatched, from all of the coordinators, vendors, down to the amazing people shopping. Highly recommend.

Little Plank Popups, ran by Erica. Erica is one of the most down to earth people I have ever met. And that transfers to her business running this market. We vended at her very first Market at Horror Freak in Bedford, and have been at almost every one since. We always have an amazing time.

The Mystical Market ran by Katie of the Groovy Coop in McKinney. I am obsessed with this twice a year market. Katie is a beautiful person and runs this market, and her store, beautifully. We always feel so welcome at her market, it’s a definite application on my end when market is approaching.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my Shoutout to my son, George E. Boutwell IV. No matter the hard times that come your way you are always in amazing spirits and always make us laugh & smile with your jokes and silly ways. You inspire us everyday to do our best and keep going.
