We had the good fortune of connecting with Dustin Mathis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dustin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was to provide a service and knowledge to the basketball players in my community to help them positively grow in their personal lives and assist them to accomplish their basketball goals. I want to provide knowledge of the game that I was never taught, in order to help them accelerate in their skills sets and be more confident overall. Mainly, I want to be a positive influence to the people I develop relationships with through the game, so they have somebody to seek guidance and support.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started training people under the name, GTG Training back in 2019, and turned it into GTG Basketball Training LLC in 2023 with the hopes to connect with players in my area and show them the skills that I wish I would’ve known when I was younger. All with the goal to see players improve and boost their confidence. Quickly, I realized how much I love guiding people to be the best they can be whether that’s in basketball or off the court. So I use my business as a vessel to connect with people from all different backgrounds while helping them achieve their goals. Ultimately, the lessons we learn in basketball can be applied off the court so it is my goal to ensure that my players feel confident in their decisions, and think the “game” through on and off the court. I believe this is what sets me apart from other trainers, the want to connect and know the person, and build genuine connections while pushing them past their limits basketball wise and helping them develop in their games.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d definitely take them to downtown Fort Worth, with all of the restaurants, and sights to see. Along with the cool outdoor courts in the area, or open runs going on at local gyms!
I’d also take them to some family events, and show them a good time with our families pool parties, birthdays or whatever’s going on with my big family!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to shoutout Jesus Christ, without Him, there’s no us, there’s no wisdom, there’s no truth and there’s no passion behind what I do. I’d also like to shoutout my wife and family who encourage me and keep me motivated to inspire the youth and be a role model to those I train. I also gotta shoutout the players who trust me to help them develop, and the coaches who trusted me to be the best basketball player I could be. Finally, I shoutout the game of basketball, because it has given me so many beautiful relationships, and a desire to be creative and curious in everything I do.
