Meet Bucky Allan | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bucky Allan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bucky, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” I think about this quote often when it comes to success. Often times people equate success as a type of social standing. This kind of perspective can deter entrepreneurs or striving self made artists from forging their own path. It’s easy to think “I’m not as good as them”. However, success is relative. Success can be measured in small moments. For example, having your first paid client or working an event you’ve been longing to participate it. Small moments lead to big moments. Each person we strive to be like had many small moments that lead to their big shining platform. It’s not our job to equate where we stand amongst others. It’s our job as artist and creatives to be better than we were that day before, and to take setbacks as a learning tool to grow from and improve. Create your own landmarks and byways to which you define as success and when you reach that point, do it again. This is what allows personal success to persevere and thrive.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The photography I create aims to focus on expression and emotion. Perhaps it’s how they present themselves to the world, how they wish to be seen, or a part of their identity that isn’t always portrayed. I value getting to know my clients. What is it that you want to see of yourself when you look back at photos 30 years from now, or how would you like to be perceived by others. What story about themselves are they wanting others to know. I enjoy evoking emotion through photography. It’s not always so easy always hit the mark. Things like light, background subjects, or where the eyes are looking can create a dramatic effect on the photo. Experimenting is fundamental to growing for me. My personal brand is using small but effective detail to tell the subjects story that can’t always be put into words.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First stop for a visiting friend who’s never been here would be the historic Fort Worth stock yards. A stroll down Exchange Ave for local shopping and experiencing the cattle drive followed by some of the best Mexican food in the area at Los Vaqueros for some tacos. During a week long visit going to the Fort Worth Zoo, walking the Trinity Trails, and a staple to eat at anytime anyone is in town at Babes Chicken, no need to go to grandmas house for dinner they’ll make it for you. For a fun night out West 7th has so many great places to grab a drink. Dirty Laundry is definitely one of the quirkiest places to visit as the entrance is a traditional looking laundromat until you walk through the washing machine as the entrance to enter the bar.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If it weren’t for social scientist and author Brené Brown I would have stood in my own way still to this day. Her discussions on shame and how it affects our daily lives completely transformed my outlook on myself in the world. I owe her many thanks for changing how I think about myself..
