We had the good fortune of connecting with Shayla Yon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shayla, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
There have been several lessons I have learned while on this journey but the one lesson that has carried me when I get discouraged is: all that I have is all that I need. Often times we get hemmed up with a long list of “if’s….then’s”, delaying our own progress forward. But I can’t control what I don’t have, and the only way I can acquire more is working with what I have; being a good steward over what I have. So in those times when I want more clients, more income, more influence I pause and take inventory of what I do have and assess if I’m being a good steward over that. I remind myself that what I have now isn’t what I started with, but look how far I’ve come. Those reminders serve as encouragement to know that I have everything I need in this present moment to get me to my desired destination.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art of choice is hair! I love doing hair! I am still fairly new to the beauty industry but I am very skilled at doing hair. Making a career change to cosmetology later in life has come with its challenges but, with every challenge I am learning more about myself, my craft and the industry and I have a great support system to keep me encouraged in times of frustration. There have been many lessons learned on my journey thus far but a lesson I constantly remind myself is success isn’t the absence of failure, its the fruit of never giving up.

I am the stylist you can trust to not only make your hair look good, but to care for your hair and teach you how to care for your hair. My guests can expect to have a thorough consultation with me so that I know how to create a look that is dependable and can be replicated at home. The trend I’m supporting in this season is a soft girl life. I want to give my guests ease with their hair regime. In a world full of complexities I want to offer my guest something simple that is still impactful.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a funny question because I am still fairly new to Dallas, I’ve lived here almost 3 years, 2 of which we were quarantined so I haven’t done much exploring, but some of my favorite areas are The Star. Legacy Hall, shopping at North Park Mall and exploring the Bishop Arts area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my tribe, my family who has held me down and been beyond supportive of me pursuing my dreams. First I want to shout my 3 favorite and most loyal clients, my mom, Shirllynn Yon, sister, Shayna Yon and grandma Verna Guess. They always allow me to perfect my craft on them. My dad, Terry Yon and brother, Solomon Yon for putting together salon chairs, branding merch for me, and being my business strategists. My close friends Collette Toney and Courtney Gay for the countless business meetings, prayers, ideas and support to start Slayed by Shay. My hair mentor and best friend Renee Gadar for sharing your wisdom, being my sounding board, having my back and remaining 10 toes down. Last but certainly not least any and everyone who’s ever sat in my chair and and trusted me with you hair, Thank you sooo much! There would be no Slayed by Shay without any of those mentioned above.
