We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Bakes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joey, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important thing I have learned is to value my time over money, everyone is out there chasing a check and they don’t realize there are things in this world better than money. I can only say that because I was one of them folks. It took me a bit to slow down and recalibrate my thinking, but once I did. I was ultimately more successful, don’t just jump on the first opportunity because there is money involved, value yourself by valuing your time.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Right now I am organizing the projects I have recorded, getting them ready for release! I am crazy excited about it because some of the songs I have been sitting on for a while. And now I am in a position to show them to the world! Never easy, alot of hard work, alot of sleepless nights, alot of jealousy and haters to overcome. I’ve learned that is to always be expected especially in the music industry. So I no longer look for the validation from others.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spots in Dallas are downtown/ elm St etc, even as a kid we used to sneak in the rooftops of all the buildings and blow trees lol. I love the nightlife. I would definitely take them to the studio, and I would take them to a few of my hangout spots or venues!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out to RZO sound (particularly HonestE) for his hard work and dedication to music. RZO has alot to do with my growth as an artist, and even thought some things got rocky between us I can’t take away from the lessons I’ve learned through working w them
