We had the good fortune of connecting with Glenda Freeman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Glenda, why did you pursue a creative career?
As a child I always knew that I wanted to be an artist; painting and creating feels so natural and easy, it is who I am, an Artist. When I paint I am in a world of my own. There are moments I get lost in the process that I feel as if time has stopped. Life is about finding happiness and doing what you love.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

Within the past 3 years, I have been busy creating. Along with some new paintings I have designed a skincare line, G. FREEMAN ARTISTRY skincare and a clothing line, Willow Collection. I have so many ideas running around in my head lol. I love creating!
I never really studied artists or art history; all I know is that I love painting and I want to live off my work. Just within the past 15 years I have studied other artists and their work by visiting art galleries; two of my favorite artists are Pollock and Miro. My friend Terrence told me that I needed to study more, so that’s what I did, took some time off from painting and studied.
Being an artist is not an easy career choice, coming in I was so naive. I thought all I had to do was create some nice art and people will purchase; boy was I wrong lol! So far to date, I have sold 6 more paintings than Van Gogh when he was alive lol Along the way I have learned to have thick skin, not everyone is going to like or understand my work, and that is ok.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My daughter and I love visiting the Shops of Legacy and Dallas Farmers Market, great shopping, and dining; what I love most about those places is that there is always an event to attend, and I can try out new small businesses. Those locations offer a great deal of inspiration.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

Wow! There are so many people, where do I begin? I first would like to thank my friend Pauline for the invite to her art studio in 2003; it sparked the Artist in me once again. Before meeting Pauline, the last time I painted was in 1997/1998. Next would be Christian, he has helped me in so many ways, he has taken photos, written copy, and created my current logo, he is a great designer, check him out, http://christianstewartdesign.net/.
Artist, Johnice Parker was a great mentor, there were things that she taught me I didn’t understand then, but now that I am a seasoned painter, I do. When it comes to creative direction, hands down by far the best is Terence Reynolds, he has watched me paint since I started in 2003, there are very people that I have allowed to watch me paint. I value his art direction and critique of my work; he keeps me grounded.
For website design and technology there is Ruby Red Frog, https://rubyredfrog.com/, they designed my first website for free and Keshande Technology, https://www.keshande.com/; Keshande has helped me out great deal with my current website, although I designed and maintain my current website, he helps me navigate with some of the technical back-end issues that arise and so much more.

A great deal of my art supplies come from donations, which means so much, it lets me know others believe in my work; thank you so much to anyone who has donated and believing in me. Finally, the men who recently purchased my storage unit and returned all my paintings to me, they have let me know there is still empathy in this world.
