We had the good fortune of connecting with Austin Hedgcoth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Austin, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Staying dedicated, keeping an open mind, and never settling.
I’ve always been the type of person to get the job done no matter what, and when you combine that with my drive to be the best at everything I do, and my desire to learn from every experience I have, you get a nice recipe for success.
I fully understand that, realistically, I am never the best at what I do, and I probably never will be. However, if I push myself to be the best anyways, I truly believe I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
Additionally, by holding myself accountable and making sure that I am putting my best foot forward every single day, in a few years, I’ll find myself even further down the path of success than I am now.
Everyone is different, though, so while these are habits that helped me find success, they may not be good habits for everyone else. The key to finding success really comes from learning your own strengths and playing towards those, whatever they may be.
Don’t fight against yourself; learn who you are and use that to your advantage!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
News is a funny business. Every single day is different, but you never know if it’ll be good different or bad different.
Honestly, though, I think a lot of us just enjoy the fact that it is different.
I’ve always been a strong writer, and so, naturally, I wanted to be a print journalist. Later, when I actually started working as a print journalist, everything felt right. Everything clicked.
But then I was exposed to the world of broadcast news—and I never looked back. Now, I can’t imagine doing anything else.
I am currently a reporter, executive producer, and the Director of News Media Content at North Texas Television.
News is an exhausting business to be in, but I wouldn’t leave it for the world.
As journalists, the difference we have the responsibility of making; the truth we have the responsibility of telling; and the lives we have the responsibility of changing are our top priorities, and there is nothing in this world that I would rather put my time and effort into.
I truly believe that nothing in this world matters more than the people around you, and that is a message I try to carry with me every single day, and spread as widely as I can.
As the great and wise Josh Kiszka once said, “where there is love, we must live on, and where there is not love, we must provide it.”
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I know this may sound strange, but I absolutely love browsing antique stores, either solo or with friends and family!
You never know what you’re going to find, especially in an area like DFW. In the same store, you could very easily run across a legitimate piece of history and the weirdest, goofiest trinket you’ve ever seen before, sitting just steps apart.
Even if you aren’t planning to buy anything, wandering around antique malls with friends is a wonderful (albeit unusual) time full of laughs and surprises.
Beyond antiques, this area is known for its arts and culture scene, with an emphasis on music.
There’s so much hidden talent here in DFW, that it would be a shame not to find a local band playing at a local venue and go show them some love!
Music has always played a big role in my life, so I would love to share the beauty of the local music scene with anyone who was down to experience it!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shoutout my family and my mentors.
I would not be where I am today without their continued love and support!
