We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Rowley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mary, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting a business was probably like a lot of other stories, it started during Covid. I’ve always done some kind of art or DIY projects on the side, either around the house or for others, but during Covid a friend of mine suggested that I start painting on furniture and it took off from there. I have a space at Plano Antique Mall # A24, 6505 W Park Blvd, Plano, TX 75093
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Art is my balance. I’m a ‘type A’ personality most of the time. I was a nurse, then worked with teenagers in foster care and of course my hardest job, being a mom of 3, so art has always been my “get out of my head” life balance.
I didn’t really pursue an art career, I was born with artistic abilities and a business fell into my lap. Art has always been in my life but, it was secondary. During COVID I started painting and creating more, because what else was there to do during lock down and viola here I am. I’m now able to create full time and I’m enjoying every minute of it.
I create on many mediums such as canvases, skateboards, or furniture. I also restore or repair antique wood furniture and recently started pyrography. I love seeing or hearing the enjoyment of people when they see my hand burned charcuterie boards or one of a kind art pieces. I’m excited to see where this adventure takes me in my “second act”.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Texas so of course the best food around is MEXICAN! I love tacos from Tacos Y Mas. I always enjoy a good comedy show, comic or horror con, festivals and of course thrifting and antiquing. There are so many around DFW that you’ll never be bored any weekend you visit. For nightlife you can go to one of the many Tiki Bars, Speakeasy or attend a Drag Show.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people that have helped me get to this stage in my life. My husband, Jeremy, who has always stood behind me and been my sounding board for everything (good and bad). During COVID my friend and fellow nurse, Amanda from The Texas Lotus, encouraged me to expand my mediums and start painting on furniture, which gave me an outlet from going stir crazy. Also Zeynep from Nuvelties and Eliana from Why Not Redesign, helped mentor and encourage me to try new techniques and styles.
