We had the good fortune of connecting with Ken Orman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ken, why did you pursue a creative career?
I think I was also meant to be an artist. I just didn’t know it.
I allowed culture to steer me into a safe, predictable career. I worked in finance for 29 years with limited fulfillment. My daughter connected me back to my artistic interests when she was little. Over time, I began to see a path of leaving the “safe” life behind and the ability and courage to leap into the life of an actor, writer, producer. There are moments of., “What am I doing?” But, truthfully I’ve never had more uncertainty but I’ve also never been happier.
I think my heart just kept reminding me all those years that I love bigger than what I’ve chosen and I am braver than I think. I listened and I left a life of certainty for adventure. Thank goodness I listened.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an actor, writer, and producer. I feel I am in a position to explore unique stories related to comedy and drama in order to illustrate differences within our communities.
Letting go of my past and past perceptions of myself has been incredibly freeing, and, of course, challenging. That process has taken just about a decade.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I always start with visits to the museums. Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth being my favorite.
I recommend taking in shows at any of the professional theaters in DFW. Dallas theater Center, Uptown Players, Theater 3, Kitchen Dog, Ochre House, Undermain, Stage West, Circle Theatre, Casa Mañana to name a few.
Try a murder mystery show at Keith & Margo’s Murder Mystery or Texas Star Dinner Theater.
Take in the Stockyards and the longhorn cattle drive.
The Fort Worth Zoo and the Botanical Gardens are beautiful and worth the trip.
For a heavy day of reflection, the Holocaust Museum and the Sixth Floor Museum are incredibly interesting and emotion stirring.
Bishop Arts has cool vibes and interesting shops.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Tiana K. Blair and Dallas Theater Center.. Thank you for your passion, focus and love. It means more than you know.
