We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcus Poole and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marcus, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Five years ago I was in a terrible accident that left me dealing with a Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that led to a Major Depressive Disorder episode. It was hard to manage daily activities and it resulted in me loosing my job as well as my family. I could not manage my own life and did not want to continue. Working with therapists I decided I would start gardening to give me some sense of purpose. So I looked into buying some garden planters, but was not satisfied with any that were out there. I decided to design my own. As I was building them I had the idea that I could build these and sell them. A few weeks later I was visiting a farmers market and realized this would be the place to sell them. I became a vendor and have been at the Frisco Fresh Market ever since. Since then I have found great purpose in building garden planters that has helped me cope with my mental illness.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe creating is the greatest thing we can do. This is because it is a piece of us. It is something that came from our mind, our effort, our work. The result is our creativity. It is a piece of our heart that we can then share with the world.
I’m where I am now, because I have allowed that creativity to grow by expressing it in creating different ideas and seeing how they turn out. They don’t always work out, but when they do it is so rewarding.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For me, the greatest things the Metroplex has to offer are it’s sports teams. The Mavericks, Stars, Rangers and even the Cowboys are my idea of the highlight of town. As far as places to eat, Torchy’s, Tender Smokehouse, Bread Zepplin and the Coppell Deli are some of my favs. Not to mention the food vendors at the Frisco Fresh Market.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My two boys, Connor & James
