We asked some of the city’s leading artists and creatives to tell us about how they decided to pursue an artistic or creative career. We’ve shared some highlights below.

Spencer Wood | Songwriter

It wasn’t my first choice, actually. I graduated college in the Spring of 2020 when COVID-19 was shutting the entire world down. The job I had lined up post-grad went up in smoke so I left Lubbock and headed home to Fort Worth where I stayed with my parents during the entire pandemic. It was the first time in my life where I had nothing going on for days at a time and I found myself playing more guitar than I ever had. I had always loved good songwriting, especially in the Texas tradition. Read more>>

Caroline Guinn | Photographer

scrapbooker, a blogger, a memory hoarder. When I was in college and newly graduated I was always the girl bringing my camera out on the town and posting an entire album on facebook (in the days before your grandmother was one of your friendly followers)! It was when I stepped into motherhood, however, that I really desired to hold onto every single little detail of the lives of my two little girls and my iphone just wasn’t cutting it. Read more>>

Jenna Bennett | Cookie Artist

Since I was little, I always wanted to be an artist when I grew up. Over the years, I’ve tried many different mediums of art. None of them stuck very long until I tried cookie decorating. I loved the process of designing a set to go perfectly with a party theme or to represent all the things a person loves most. When I presented these little edible works of art to clients, the joy they created was inspiring. Custom cookies are the perfect way to celebrate an occasion and I love how they have connected me to my community and my inner artist. Read more>>

Mindee Beaver | Mixed Media Artist

I’ve always been a creative person, with music as my first passion. I’ve played piano since I was 7 years old and sang since I was a pre-teen, and still do both today. In fact, when I was growing up, I wanted to be a concert pianist or music teacher. When it came time for college, my focus changed completely and I decided I wanted to pursue psychiatry, although I continued to sing in the Austin College Acapella Choir and various choirs at TCU. I only took one art class in college and barely passed. Needless to say, a career in art never even entered my mind. Eventually I ended up in the commercial insurance industry specializing in oil, gas, marine, and aerospace. Read more>>

Ariana Hartman | Ingenious

I have always been interested in art. Starting at age 5 I would paint, draw, and create things out of nothing. Out of my friend group I’d say I was the artsy one. After school you could find me in the art room finishing a project or starting anew. I’ve had my art displayed a few times at the Arlington art exhibit. I feel it’s a way of expression that I have found to be relaxing. Read more>>

Daisy Xochitl | Artist, Content Creator, and Entrepreneur

Ever since I was a little girl, I never imagined having a typical job as odd as it sounds. My love for designing and creating runs deep, so it is only right that my career path reflects my passions. I remember being asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, and my answer was a designer. The teacher who was interviewing me at the time was perplexed at my simple answer and was shocked that I wanted to leave the word fashion out of it. Read more>>

Ana Karen Marcor Hernandez | Tattoo Artist

As crazy as it sounds, I had my mid-life crisis at 25 years old. 25 hit me hard and made me re-evaluate what I wanted out of life. I always knew I wanted to be a full time artist but I was never ready to take the risk. In 2021 I chose to quit my job and become a full time tattoo artist. Sounds cliche, but taking this jump gave me the life I wanted. I never wake up dreading to go to work; I have the freedom to make my own schedule and I get to do what I love. Read more>>

Mark Murray | Audio Engineer, Music Producer, Content Creator

Growing up, I was always inspired by music. Listening became an obsession. While my peers were watching TV I was far more interested in listening to music, letting my mind create the images that would accompany the track. Collecting music, refining my hi-fi system and learning to play my instrument became my lifelong hobby. I am fortunate to have been able to turn that hobby into a career. Read more>>
