I knew that the research I conduced on penguins’ mitochondrial DNA, their breeding behavior and the impacts of climate change was something I wanted as many people as possible to see and understand. From the time I first began photographing people experiencing homelessness and recording their stories at the age of 15, I have had two goals. My first goal is to humanize people experiencing homelessness. This is important because, so often, these people are viewed and treated as subhuman simply because they are unhoused. But what we are (i.e., persons) gives us value, not what we have (i.e., a house). My second goal is to shine a spotlight on their plight. This needs to be done because, on any given night in the US, there are more than 650,000 people experiencing homelessness. Read more>>
