We had the good fortune of connecting with Young Drew 214 and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Young, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I feel like it picks you, we can only be what we are in this world. It came natural to me and I function and feel best when I’m being an artist and creating. We are all made for certain reasons and when we find that reason we excel. Along the journey I’ve seen the tragic and sad event of people going through a career that wasn’t meant for them or where they just didn’t fit that role and I knew I couldn’t live that way.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a hip hop artist and songwriter from Dallas. I love poetry and stories and started writing poetry when I was in first grade and because of my older brothers CD collection and his radio I quickly got into hip hop and knew that’s what I wanted to do when I grew up. I lived all over the world because of my fathers job and that really cultured me to art in general especially traveling all over Europe. It gave me a open and eccentric ear for different kinds of production. What sets me apart is my detailed writing, my view and my subject matters. Most of my influences are songwriters and lyricists so naturally I am to. My Christian faith plays a huge role in my music as well I don’t swear or use derogatory language. It gives my music a different dynamic then what you get from everyone else, so if its a love song or a song about a struggle its coming from a Christian perspective. What I’m most excited about is a phenomenon that’s been happening since 2019. A song from a Mix-tape I released in 2017 is popping up all around the world from Europe to Australia, Japan and everywhere in between with no promotion, it’s puzzling but in a good way. I got to where I am today by simply just not giving up and having a strong focus and work ethic. When problems arose and believe me there were some big problems mentally It wasn’t the thought of Oh no I have to stop, but OK this is an obstacle how do I get over it to keep making music. Its not been easy but its worth it. If you’ve found your purpose and have the right reason its incredible what you can accomplish and endure. Lessons I learned along the way are do the best with what you have, always be kind and grateful to anyone who supports you, and do honest business ,and lastly focus on being productive one day at a time this adds up over the years. What I would like the world to know about my story is that Iv been doubted, people have ridiculed and made fun of me. I’ve dealt with fear and the reality of failure and uncertainty. Struggled everyday, but the goal remained the same. I wouldn’t stop until I gave it everything I have.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would have to go to the Museum of Biblical and Jewish art. There’s a great spot in Garland near the quarry that’s perfect for star gazing.
Head to spring creek for some BBQ.
Make time for Afrah for great middle eastern food with hookah and music.
A sunset walk through Breckenridge.
Stroll the Bishop arts district and grab tea or coffee there.
Exploring downtown Dallas at night for taking photos.
Breakfast at El Chicos.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many ups and downs mostly downs with being an up and coming artist. Without Jesus Christ I would have been a mess during the dark moments of this journey. He continual even to this day blesses me with opportunities and gifts whether financial, situational or just meeting people to encourage and support me along the way. I also want to give a huge shout out to my parents. I had to show and prove to them that I had enough talent and drive to really do this but once they heard my first couple of projects they have supported me all the way. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
