We had the good fortune of connecting with Vohnnykage and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vohnnykage, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Identity. I wouldn’t have been able to get anywhere I have been if I wasn’t being true to who I am. It took years to learn that after trying to cater to others and what I thought success as a producer was rather than success as me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel the main feature of my art that sets me apart, aside from overall presence, is my production. I started my career as a producer when I was 9 years old. I went on to get my first placement with Talib Kweli at age 11 and continued to expand from there eventually obtaining placements with Lecrae, Royce da 5’9, Lupe Fiasco, Miguel, and more. This success put me in rooms I could’ve only imagined to be in at the time. Through that period I acquired so much information and spent a lot of time polishing my craft without compromise until it got harder to get placements. My production got to a point where it was hard for artist to know what to do or even hear themselves on it. My goal was always to create full songs rather than just beats so this dilemma created a hole I felt only I could fill. This thought began my artist journey but little did I know filling that hole was much harder than I thought. From then I’ve spent the past 5 years in student mode learning from peers and mentors asking questions that only I could answer for myself. It’s been an extremely long road and I can’t wait to expand on this throughout my career. My brand and story will speak for themselves but one thing the world should know is that I’m nothing without God and putting him first is the only thing that has gotten me here and will take me to the moon.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m definitely a home body so I don’t go out much but knowing me and my friends, if they’re in town we would spend most our time at my mom’s house and the studio. Other than that there are a few museums I visit for inspiration like Dallas Contemporary, Daisha Board Gallery, or Dallas Museum of Art. Some of my favorite places to eat include tacocityymas, probably my favorite taco spot. Then we have WAYA or Wabi ramen, Cris and John, Ka Thai, Grimaldis, etc. Honestly I consider myself a foodie so that list can go on for ages.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My father, SymbolycOne. This journey wouldn’t exist without him. He has set a great example on how to be involved but at the same time separate from the madness of the industry. He’s continuing a legacy my grandfather started on an exponential level and has laid a path for me to do the same.
