We had the good fortune of connecting with Vidya Thuduma and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vidya, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Quality and originality of the end product
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Baking and Cake Decorating is my passion, When I create cakes, the underlying sentiment is not just for it to look beautiful and taste delicious, but for it to tug at the heart of the person it is made for. I bake to create memories for those that eat it; to make them feel special and to show them that they are worthy of that masterpiece.
I specialize in egg-free cakes with Indian fusion flavors along with classic western flavors and in various kinds desserts such cupcakes, cake jars, cakesicles, cake pops and macarons.
I quit my job and moved to USA with my husband who got a wonderful opportunity to work here. In my spare time, I busied myself in understanding the science behind baking by reading books at library, watching tutorials on YouTube, and consuming baking blogs with a voracious appetite.
In 2018 I baked my younger sons birthday cake. It was loved not just by my family but everyone who tasted it. The reviews were humbling and emotional. I took these emotions and those that I had garnered over the years and
built Vidya’s Cakes and Treats. In the beginning, I was taking orders mostly from friends and colleagues, and thanks to the reviews and their compliments, soon other customers followed suit through word-of-mouth engagement.
Noting is easy when you seek to push your boundaries, get out of your comfort zone to venture into a new field!
I can recount the emotions I felt when my initial baking experiments would fail, and I couldn’t help feeling I would never be a good enough baker, that it just wasn’t for me. I am a self-taught baker who dedicated my time and myself to learning, experimenting and opening my heart to being inspired.
And I have been inspired and awed by some of the greatest bakers there are for which I am deeply thankful. It is not an easy ride by any means, especially when you set your benchmarks very high, all while raising two beautiful children. But those benchmarks and the sleepless nights have paved the way for this dream to be a reality today. So I’d say the rocky
roads have turned this journey into an adventure and I wouldn’t want to change a thing.
When the road gets too adventurous, I remind myself –
“Passion, practice, persistence, and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success”
One of my customers once said ‘You make my dreams come true through your cakes’; so, I would say, I want the world to recognize us as a brand that makes the dream come true through the cakes!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dallas being the third-largest city in Texas has quite a number of interesting must visit places!
Day 1: I would definitely start the day one with John Neely Bryan Cabin- the first house ever built in Dallas and then take a tour of the Dallas Art District starting from Dallas Museum of Art(DMA), Nasher Sculpture Center, Crow Collection of Asian Art, Kennedy Memorial and grab lunch in Klyde Warren Park food trucks. Then experience the Dallas historic M-line trolley to uptown Dallas for some amazing food. Then to the Reunion Tower for Night view of the City.
Day 2: For a nature loving friend I would take them to White Rock Lake, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden for nice picnic or a day trip to Lake Texoma.
Day 3: For an out of state friend, a visit Fort Worth Stockyards to simply explore the Fort Worth Stockyards to learn about the history of the Texas livestock industry in the town where the West began.
A weekend drive to Waco to visit Magnolia Market at Silos, Austin for live music and San Antonio to visit Alamo, stroll down the Riverwalk and boat tour in River walk followed by dinner at Rita’s on the river with great ambience!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am profoundly grateful to my family, the support system for enabling me to live this dream. I can’t thank my husband enough for the love and faith he has shown in me. Without that backbone, I wouldn’t have dared to dream this big. My kids are one of the most important reasons behind me picking baking and cake decorating by rekindling my passion for baking. They continue to motivate and challenge me everyday and I hope to continue to spread joy and delight with my baking.
