We had the good fortune of connecting with TYC Veronica and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi TYC, how do you think about risk?
The life of an Artists revolves around constantly risking your worth, your vulnerability and talent for the world to either accept or crucify. More specifically for a poet, for me, it has become a gamble of what truths I want the world to know and how in depth do I want to reveal this truth. Slam poetry revolves around judges who have no connection to poetry and they will score your poem based off their emotions. This is their first impressions and some may not be able to see the difference between poet and poem.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a slam poet. I host local open mics and I do features in the Texas area. I am super proud of the journey that I am on and the life I am creating around this journey. I have been able to become more involved with the local community and become a pillar for the Filipino community. My open mic nights are for others to come out to support other cultures. This journey began at the end of 2021 when I won a spot on Dallas Poetry Slam team and have been escalating since then. I’ve been able to teach my passion to students and schools. I have been able to be involved with more organizations that understand my artistry. A struggle I face is not being paid my worth in this industry. Poetry Is not a bill many want to pay when it comes to entertainment. I am learning along the way that it is never okay to cut my prices or have to explain myself constantly about why my prices are the way they are. I am turning heads for a reason and many want to work with me for a reason. The famous saying goes, Those who matter dont mind and those who mind dont matter. For every no I say gives me an opportunity to say yes for another time. Exposure is always my goal as long as its aligned with where I want my business to go. Exposure does not pay Bill’s though so standing firm with what I want to get paid is priority.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m not great at this question because I can never think of the places on the spot haha. Let’s try, Depending when they come in I’d love to take them to a speakeasy in the area. Something with lofi music, drinks and finger foods. For food wise, I would take them to Reunion Tower since many do not know there is a restraunt on top. Texas has amazing hiking spots that I would love to share. Take them around Dallas for the immersive musuems and the Art Musuem we have. I love the water so we will also check out White Rock lake or Joe Pool Lake. There Is a ton of places I’d probably try out too!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to Dallas Poetry Slam, Mahal Eating, Creatives Factory, Chocolate Secrets, Lonestar Palengke, My Family, God and everyone who comes out to my shows. This is to highlight a few.
