We had the good fortune of connecting with Tom Cusick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tom, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Regardless of effort, each of us are faced with some sort of constant risk in our lives. There was certainly risk involved when I started my company and put my life’s savings towards going out on my own and growing a business. The key for me was learning how to mitigate risk by pursing my passion. Because real estate and home building was what I am the most passionate about, it’s also what I am most educated in. This drive and knowledge help me find opportunity where others may not have seen it, or didn’t act upon it. This has helped me grow my business from the new builder on the block, to the largest in my area. One of my favorite quotes is “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” I feel this is very true but obviously timing has a lot to do with this as well.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets us apart is our the quality and customization we provide in our homes. When you see one of our homes, it’s obvious who the builder is. Our designs are often forward thinking and move toward transitional architecture, incorporating smooth cut stone, natural wood & stone and metal roofs, and generally away from what we call “Texas Traditional,” which has brown brick and stone you see in most developments.
One of the things I’m most proud of is our ability to create something completely different in our neighborhood, repeat a successful formula and transition from the new builder to the leader in the community. It’s very humbling to know our designs and homes are well received, allowing us to employee a modest staff full-time who can in-turn provide for their families is something I take great pride in.
Nothing comes easy. It’s been a long road with years of work, failures and successes, to get where we are today. And although we’ve been fortunate to be where we are, we still have to work hard everyday to continue to grow.
At the end of the day, I simply want people to know Thomas Cusick Custom Homes as a builder who values honesty and quality and puts the same amount of dedication into their clients’ home as they would their own. It’s as basic as the Golden Rule in our company.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We stay in our bubble for the most part, which includes Farmers Branch and Addison. Addison has numerous restaurants we love to visit, making it a short drive from our home. If we get out, there are a few staples though, including the Arboretum, Dallas & FTW Zoo, FTW Stockyards, play golf at Brookhaven CC or Four Seasons and take a visit to Cedar Creek Lake.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It goes without saying, I could not be here if not for the help of others. Without a doubt, it takes a lot of love, support and encouragement from others to help anyone build a business from inception to success. First to note is my family. I have the loving support of my wife Lisa, and my Mom. There has never been a single day when either of these two ladies would ever let me believe anything other than success was an option. On bad days, each has been there to lift my spirits up and provide positive reinforcement to allow my to push through and realize tomorrow starts anew and whatever strife we face will soon be a thing of the past.
The second would be Bill Gambel, a mentor and great friend. Bill helped me out when I needed a job and friend, pushed me to get my college degree, and gave me guidance on how to lead a team of people. He was instrumental in my development as a business professional.
