We had the good fortune of connecting with Tierra Palmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tierra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have been working in business operations in healthcare for the last 5 years, helping other people run thier businesses. So, when I had my second child, I decided to take some time off and was finally given the opportunity to change my career focus. When it came to running a business, I already had the experience. I just needed to think of something I enjoyed doing that I would love to be paid to do. Photography and traveling both came to mind. I have always loved taking photos and traveling but considered them both to be a hobby. Then, I thought wow, I’m actually kind of good at taking pictures. I should make this into a business. Becoming a travel agent followed soon after.

What should our readers know about your business?
As a travel agent what sets me apart is that I am a traveling, travel agent. I have been to many places around the world so I am able to help my clients beyond booking the travel. This is very helpful for first time travelers for sure. As a photographer, what sets me apart is my personality. I have yet to meet a person that I am unable to relate to in some type of way. I try to build a relationship with my customers to also build trust. Practice has gotten me where I am today. To get better at pictures, you have to take more pictures. It isn’t always easy to stay motivated once it moves from your hobby to your job but once I complete a job and see the final results, I get excited all over again. So far what I learned is that consistency is what makes your craft better and your business successful. It sounds cliche but it still holds true. I want the world to know that if you have something that you love doing that brings you joy, make time for it whether you are being paid to do it or it’s a hobby. Doing things that make you happy should be at the top of your priority list. You have to fill your own cup before you can effectively pour into others.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Whenever my parents visit me, I like to take them to all of the good spots in the city that sell good sweets! Some of my favorite places are the Cake Bar, Cookie Society, Cinnaholic, and my new favorite Two Sisters Sweet Creations. I always have a sweet too. I also like to get Bar B Que from Lockhart Smokehouse BBQ in Oak Cliff and good sushi rolls from Hibachio in Midlothian.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a good support system through my close friends and family. My husband has been supportive through my transition from working for someone else to working for myself. My best friends have encouraged me to seek my passions and helped me to realize that as a photographer, I am an artist and I do have a craft. I am thankful for the support of my husband, my parents, and my best friends, the faithful four! I also have to shoutout Dee Porter for being my mentor last summer and helping get familiarized with the world of photography beyond taking pictures.
