We had the good fortune of connecting with Terri Hoover and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Terri, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
You don’t get to give up just because things are hard! People count on you. Your employees, sales people, clients and family. That is why I surround myself with driven hungry people. So when one is feeling down or like quitting the others move to the front and begin to pull. I cannot say enough about a strong team.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Artistik Edge hair studio has been in business for over 30 years. It has stood the test of time, evolved, overcome many of life’s challenges and now we are making an amazing comeback from a pandemic! As the founder I floundered for the first few years until I was joined by 3 amazing ladies. One retired a few years back and one is our most senior extremely talented stylist, Anita and the last has been the reason we have continued to come out on top over and over again, that is Rebecca the other owner. In our industry we are in the people business, out front and behind the scenes. Ups and downs daily. Divorces, deaths, hurt feelings, beautiful & ugly reviews, ups & downs with the economy. Right now we are focusing on our staffs mental health, trying to work with their fears, anxieties and economic comeback. We try to pull together as a team and sometimes that is easier said than done. We meet monthly, have smaller ‘growth groups’ and a number system to let others know when you are not mentally high. That entails putting your ‘number’ on your locker everyday. 1 being the lowest and 5 being on top of the world. It helps us to be aware of one another’s mental place for the day. We have learned we need one another! Sometimes you are pulling the load and other days you are being pulled along.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a creature of habit and I love the neighborhood I work in so first and foremost we would head to the Resident Taqueria for some of the finest tacos in town, an evening at Rm 12:20 for some French cuisine and of course Alamo Draft house for movies and drinks. Lake Highlands has some of most lovely tree lined streets, yummy restaurants and friendly people.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have 2 shoutouts. 1 is my amazing business partner Rebecca Crosby and 2 is our other partner and my husband Tom Hoover.
