We had the good fortune of connecting with Terrance Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Terrance, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
You have some people that call it risk and other community’s refer to risk as discernment. I lean more toward having a spirit of discernment. I rely heavily on my instincts to determine what feels right when making moves. Its actually quite simple! Its important that you make decisions based on things that are natural and avoid making emotional decisions. Those are the worst! There is no need for you to go through that. Take it from the horses mouth (ME) and flee!!! Risk are equivalent to relationships. If it feels natural then its probably the right decision. However if issues and situations present themselves early on then its possible you navigated that incorrect. Ill give you an analogy at no charge… Think about approaching animals. Lets take a dog for example. If the dog is wagging his tail, whimpering, pulling toward you and jumping then its safe to say he/she likes you. In other news; if the dog creates that hump in their back, growling, barking or simply shows no emotion towards you.. Uhmm, their going to bite you! I get a kick out of people who experienced scenario #2 and cant believe they got bit lol… Take that approach with risk and you will be fine.. I’m interviewing with Voyage so I believe that approach has led me in the right direction.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I believe what sets Smith Spot BBQ apart from others is me. I’ve always been a hard worker, dedicated and loyal to whatever I do. Something as simple as tying a shoe.. Better believe I’m going to work at having the best knot! At an early age Pops would say come up big and outwork your opponent. When I was younger Id be in my room playing Madden 94 on Sega Genesis. The door swings open and its pops… Son, while you’re in here playing the game its somebody on the other side of the world working to get yo spot.. Not your but Yo spot.. I still take the same approach to this day. I’m simply going to outwork you… Period I’m most proud that I have endured. The scripture’s say he that endures till then end the same should be saved. I see some young entrepreneur’s that want it all right now. Instant gratification. Running a business will continue to be a work in progress. I do my best to stay humble, endure and more importantly keep the vision that I see for Smith Spot BBQ.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, I’m a little different. I feel like the environment adds to a good time but the company you keep is the spotlight. I could watch the grass grow with my friends and we would have a blast! However, this doesn’t mean that I don’t have networks to keep my out of towners pleased. I’m an outdoors kind of person. Id take my friend out on the boat for some water sports or fishing. Possibly to the Garland Gun Range to try out some new toys. If my friend is into working out I have a guy. Athletic Zone will take care of that itch. Dallas Farmers Market is always an exciting spot with great vendors, food options and entertainment. Did someone say pizza?? Lets hit up Zalats Pizza in Dallas off Lamar. The margarita pizza is dead on!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I always want to give praise to The Most High… Honestly, my life could have taken a turn in many directions but with his guidance, teaching, commandments and wisdom this sheep that was once lost has been found. I want to shoutout to my family. Pops, mom and sister especially. I couldn’t and probably wouldn’t want to do it without them. They have all played such an important role in my life and being so supportive. I also want to thank them for trusting in my decision process and allowing me to lead. Also, I have to give a shoutout to my two brothers by another mother. Gilbert aka Birdy (@castmetalworks) and DC (Coach D @AthleticZone) These two men are my main guys. I met Gilbert in the second grade and we have been rocking since. Fun fact on how he got the name Birdy. At Club Hill Elementary we had a swing set that desperately need some WD-40. We were all swinging and at the highest point you would jump out of the swing. So I went first and I have always been a big dude so needless to say.. I didn’t get very high lol… Gilberts turn!! As he jumped out the swing I was watching him hang in there air from 1:30pm until recess was over at 2:30! I promise lol… He was up there with the Birds in the sky. When he finally landed at 2:31pm I said ” You looked like a Bird”!! I’m calling you Birdy lol We have been brothers for over 30 years. I’m sure he has stories about me but if you need some welding done, custom fence or just want to meet a standup guy. Hola at Birdy…
Shout to Birdy and his beautiful family Vi, Angelica, Launa, Lex
Eleanor DC, when I tell you that this brotha came at the right time. I met him on a college football recruiting trip at Texas A&M Commerce. The coaches must have decided to bring in the top recruits at the same time since we were there together lol ( I made that part up but we were the best lol) We eventually became roommate’s and actually he was the first to taste my food. I had a BBQ grill outside the dorm and I decided to make some lemon pepper chicken. My 1st batch tasted okay but it was missing something, Dc said “Kinfolk add a little seasoning salt”.. So I did… What… Did… I…. Do.. That.. For!!! My chicken was off the chain lol… So we started trading and selling it.. Fun fact about DC. I use to come up with these mad scientist workouts that would run everyone off. He was the only one that ever stayed and worked out with me.. How ironic is it that he runs a gym and has taken it so far past the next level its ridiculous! I like to think that he sparked my career and I sparked his.. Shoutout to my dude and his beautiful family. His rib Naomi, Amaya, Ava, Moses and Noah
