We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taylor, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Finding a work life balance has been very instrumental in helping me become a better businesswoman and person over all to be honest. When I first began to bake it was something I did for fun and allowed me to express myself through the art of making desserts. At that time baking was relaxing for me, it was apart of my balance. That balance was thrown off when I began working as a pastry cook full time and running my business part time. At that time I was baking nonstop. Although I loved what I did for a living, I began to feel mentally and physically drained. Then I learned better time management skills and incorporated fun activities in my life that would give me a break from the hustle and bustle of working. I started feeling much better and happier. I think the quality of my work has also improved because the balance brought about more peace and productivity. I definitely recommend that everyone find a work life balance. It is never to early or too late to start. Thank yourself later!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a professionally trained pastry chef residing in the DFW area. I specialize in making desserts that taste like they came straight from heaven, hence the name *wink wink*! I make customized cakes for all occasions, brownies, cookies and a few other treats. I am most excited about a new business concept that I aim to launch later this year. I will still be serving up heavenly sweets, however it will be a new and improved menu. STAY TUNED! My professional career began about 8 years ago when I started my baking business. I took a 2 year break when I went to college and resumed business my senior year of college. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree I decided to switch careers and go to culinary school. Big jump, I know! I was very passionate about baking again. So I wanted to take my skills to the next level as well as learn about the business side of the field. I am now a certified pastry chef and have decided to launch a new baking concept incorporating what I have learned. My professional journey has been fun but it has also had some very challenging moments of growth. At one point I was working, going to school, and running my business. That was the hardest period of my career this far, but it taught me how to persevere. I also learned that the hard times in life will always pass. Things will get better and you will be a stronger person because of what you went through. I want the world to know that you can go as far as push yourself to go. Even if it is scary, chase your dreams!!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So I’m gonna break my itinerary down by category because so many thoughts come to mind for social life in Dallas! I have a pretty laid back personality so I tend to stick to more chill spots to hang out at around the city. Food: Kookie Haven The Island Spot Cake Bar Desoto Grow Market The Farmer’s Market Campuzano’s Americano Tutta’s Pizza Places to Visit: Punch Bowl Social Deep Ellum Down Town Uptown Dallas Contemporary Art Museum Museum of Illusions

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First I would like to dedicate my shout out to my parents and family!! They have been my biggest supporters, fans, sponsors, and taste testers since the very beginning. They always have my back and encourage me to never give up no matter what life throws at me. Next I would like to shout an amazing motivational speaker, Dr. Guillory!! She took me under her wings when I was in high school and she taught me so much about being self-employed, networking, and so much more. She has truly set a great example as a mentor and I am forever grateful for the impact she’s had in my life.
