Meet Taylor Carr | Music Artist & DJ

We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Carr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.” This is always said by my closest friend Ethan Swindull (DJ Altruist) from Houston!
I love this quote so much because it always pushes me to keep going and creating no matter what. The nature of this quote is so simple but means so much. “Keep pushing and working hard, your moment is coming soon.” is how I internalize it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would say the traits of mine that sets me apart from others would be a combination of my personality, style, and the experiences I bring with my artistry. Whether it be my music productions, my DJ sets, or my self-made visuals, each one is designed to create a captivating experience that people from all walks of life can enjoy!
I have a lot to be excited about and proud of! I’m very excited about what’s in store for the near future for me! I’m graduating from the University of Texas at Dallas soon with a Computer Science degree for a start! Not only that, but I have a plethora of projects in the works for my brand. My fans can look forward to a lot of new music, new merch designs, and bigger events! When it comes to what I’m proud of, that can be boiled down to my growth as both a person and an artist over the years. Along with that, I’m proud of never giving up on myself, regardless of the situation. I have my parents to thank for that one!
It is rarely easy to come up as an artist. Personally, I overcame a lot of these challenges by networking with other like-minded people from a range of expertises. This led to me becoming great friends with other artists, photographers, VJs, promoters, and more awesome, talented people! These friends can range from being right here in Dallas to overseas in places like Greece. Sometimes all it takes is that 1 person out of 100, who believes in you and wants to help you succeed.
Throughout my time as an artist, I have learned so many lessons that have helped me along the way. The idea of always being humble is one of the main things I believe all artists should follow. You never know who you might be talking to or what you might learn when meeting new people. That first impression can seriously make or break a powerful networking opportunity for you. Regardless of what point you are in your career, we can all learn something new.
Another lesson I learned, was to not be afraid of being myself and to stay confident in your art. I, as well may other creatives, classify myself as an avid overthinker. This usually causes me to try too hard on something, self-doubt my talent or even just misinterpret a situation or comment. It took a lot of time for me to really understand that my journey, is mine for a reason. Comparing yourself to others as a way to learn and improve is great! But letting it get to the point where you aren’t sure of yourself because of seeing what other artists, ESPECIALLY major artists are achieving is not ok. Keep pushing and stay true to your vision.
One major thing I would like the world to know about myself as PRSM and my #ShineYourLight tag, is that I believe everyone has a creative side to them, No matter if it is drawing, singing, acting, etc., it provides the world with more amazing content for all to enjoy. I want people to shine their creative talents for others to see! It not only gives you the chance to meet people with similar skills and work with them, but also a chance to make a difference in someone’s life. I decided that my “light” is the experiences I bring people though my music along with the respect I treat everyone with.
Another important thing for me, is being an inspiration for the younger African American generation, like my nephews, Samir and Levi. Showing kids like them that no matter what label or box someone might try to put you in, due to where you are from, you can achieve anything that you put work in for. After being around people like my parents, Shaquille O’Neal (DJ Diesel), and many other black trendsetters and seeing them break the mold, I found myself inspired to do the same

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a massive boba tea person, so I would have to recommend Ding Tea in Richardson as a starting point for the weekend. For places to eat, there are so many to choose from! I’m really big on Asian style meals, so we could either go to Gen Korean BBQ House or Tokyo Harbor which is an amazing Hibachi Bar Grill. I have had amazing experiences from all of these places, so I highly recommend them!
One of my favorite places to go in Dallas is the Fixation VR arcade. It’s the largest and most high-tech arcade in DFW and offers fully immersive gameplay that includes an insane surround sound rig that will blow your mind when you play. This would 100% have to be a location we hit. Another one is the Museum of Illusions. This place has a lot of mind-blowing exhibits that always sparks inspiration for my creative side.
Being as invested in the music scene as I am, I extremely enjoy going and supporting other artists at places like the House of Blues, the Bomb Factory, the South Side Ballroom. They are massive city hotspots that will for sure diversify your music tastes. They have plenty of events each week, so this would be one we go to more than once. If they just want a more relaxed time, we would have to hit two of my favorite bars, The Green Elephant and The Old Monk. Both places have amazing service and great drinks and food.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Jeez, there are so many people I would have to shout out. My mom and my dad first of all. Both of them being African American pioneers in the field of basketball really inspired me at a young age. My mom, Denise Taylor, being one of the first 8 coaches in the WNBA for the Utah Starzz, along with my dad, Antoine Carr, being an NBA veteran for teams like the Utah Jazz and San Antonio Spurs, definitely contributed to my “Never Give Up” mentality and work ethic in everything I do. Their support in my journey as an artist has been one of my biggest driving factors, plus seeing them in the crowd, starting moshpits or headbanging is always a fun time.
Crazy enough, I recently found out that my granddad (James Carr) was a R&B and soul singer from Mississippi! So music runs deeper in my family than I thought.
A few others would be my insanely talented friends in the music scene, of course! Ethan Swindull (DJ Altruist), Dariush Mash (Mashbit), Cam Taylor & Dustin Anderson (Alienation), multi-platinum recording artist T-Wayne, Justin Franklin (JFRANK) and so many more inspire me every day to be better than I was yesterday and strive for excellence. Working with all of these guys throughout the years, has been a blessing to my career I would never have thought to ask for.
