We had the good fortune of connecting with LaToya Owens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaToya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I saw a need in our community on financial literacy and I wanted to be the solution to that problem.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Customer service is really important to me and I make sure that my clients are treated like family. I love sharing my expertise with my clients and the public to give them more education in the world of taxes. It gives me great joy of when I am speaking with a client and they have a sigh of relief when I am able to assist them. I will say it wasn’t easy to get started. You have doubts of making the right decisions, making sure clients are happy, and simply balancing your family with starting a new business. Once you are able to overcome those fears, you have no way to go but up. I want the world to know that I care about not only my clients but also the legacies they are able to create for their own families based on my teachings. Knowledge means nothing if someone else’s life is not changed.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in the DFW area and I am huge fan of live music and concerts. Most recent concert I went to was Toni Braxton for my husband’s birthday. IT WAS AWESOME! Favorite Restaurants: Steakhouse- Truluck’s or Eddie V’s Casual-Cheddars or Red Rock Canyon Seafood-Krab Kingz or Pappadeaux I love great food! As far as other entertainment, we would probably go bowling, jazz lounge, or simply taking a tour of a botanical garden or state park. I love nature!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The book that changed my life was the Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. My husband and I began taking the baby steps in 2008 and we have come a long way based on these teachings. I have even incorporated some of his teachings in my own financial counseling program to let people know with hard work and determination that you can also overcome their financial hurdles. I would also like to give a shout out to my husband Jeremiah Owens. We endured our difficult financial struggles together and we are now able to help others in our circle of families and friends. My business mentor, Hezekiah Griggs III, was a great mentor before his unexpected passing in December 2016. He encouraged me on opening my firm and gave great advice on how to grow my business. It isn’t a day I don’t think about him and the impact he had in my life and he will be greatly missed.
