We had the good fortune of connecting with Tara Porter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tara, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a very young girl I found that I had some talent in the beauty industry. My interest was sparked because of my mothers natural talent. She never did hair professionally only for family and friends, mostly us (her daughters). I just knew that I enjoyed it and I was good at it. Couple that with watching my father become an entrepreneur, I believe that there was a seed planted. It just taught me that there were options. Fast forward into my adult life, at some point after experiencing both sides of earning a living I learned that I had a very strong preference! At this point I truly believe that I am unemployable! When you consider each aspect of what working for someone else means it’s a no brainer for me. From state laws down to office personnel it can get tricky! I have done a few independent ventures to say the least and nothing is more fulfilling for me than having freedom, flexibility and options. I believe that being a business owner means that I get to set the tone, the expectations, the rules, the goals, I create the environment, I choose the industry that feelings good to me and that can change if I so desire, and it has. I believe that as a business owner you get to explore with your imagination, fun can matter and family can be a real priority! Although, as a business owner you get to make all of the decisions you also have more responsibility. For me it’s a fair trade and I wouldn’t change a thing!
What should our readers know about your business?
I have an insurance brokerage focusing on life insurance but licensed in life, health, property and casualty. I am extremely passionate about abolishing the need for go fund me pages. As a person who has experienced losing a loved one (my mother) who deceased with out life insurance. I’d love nothing more than to remove that experience as an option for anyone else. I believe that my desire to educate people about coverages and life rather than to just sell the coverages, sets me apart. I enjoy speaking to groups of all sizes in most any environment just to share what Iv’e learned. It’s true that when people know better they do better. So, they sell themselves on the idea once they have the information and I get to help them be better prepared. Getting to where I am hasn’t been easy but it’s been exciting for me to watch myself grow. I have a long way to go to reach my destination but I’m truly enjoying the ride. For me over coming challenges is all about the mind set. Mindset has become a very popular term but the truth is, mindset is where power lives. If you can “get your head in the game”, you can win! I’d want the world to know that everything about me and my brand stem from my love for people. It’s so strong it’s painful at times. When you want the best for someone who has yet to realize the best as an option for themselves….Pain! What makes that pain survivable….Faith and a strong mindset!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First of all, My name is Tara Porter and I am a foodie! If we are doing food and family fun it’s chicken n pickle for me. The food is awesome and they have games all over the place. They even have some separate adult baloney space if we want to be away from the family fun and still be able it. Which is just as much fun. If we are making cute, girly, brunchy moves its XOXO in Dallas, no question. I really love some of the good clean light bites so we’d visit modern market, flower child and cool greens. For outdoor experiences I like Clyde Warren Park in Dallas, The Epic trail in Grand Prairie, Dallas arboretum and botanical gardens and the Fort Worth water gardens. For night life its The Sky Blu roof top in Dallas, Michaels of Irving Lounge, 4thirteen sports bar or Visions eatery and lounge in Irving. I’d check the events schedule for the Arlington Improve comedy club and the Texas Trust Cu Theater in Grand Prairie for shows and concerts. Shopping would take place at the North Park mall, Parks mall and the Grand Prairie outlet mall to offer a little variety. If it’s warm outside a stop at the sweet frog frozen yogurt is a must. I also love a good movie theater experience, the ones with the nice recliners! Since I come from a family game night kind of family I’d likely have a game night at the house!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
WOW! This is a really beautiful and very important question. There are so many people that I am truly grateful to have or have had in my corner. My mother was the first cheerleader that I ever had. She seemed to believe that I could do what ever I put my mind to. My younger sister Kimberly has always endorsed, supported and even participated in many of my ventures. I eventually bonded with and built friendships with women who have been and still are very supportive of everything that I do. I’d eventually gave birth to 2 daughters who also are big fans and supporters of mine. I can even remember many of my clients in my hair dresser days who would cheer on every idea and show up at any event that I was apart of. As I have moved into other industries many of those same people are clients and or supportive in some way with my current business. When I think about it….. I have to send my shoutout to women! Most of my ventures have been in industries that cater to women and together we have grown and bonded and supported each other to the best of our ability. SHOUTOUT TO MY LADIES!!! I LOVE AND APPRECIATE EACH AND EVERY SINGLE ONE THAT HAS CROSSED MY PATH AND AFFECTED MY EXPERIENCE AS A HUMAN BEING!
