We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Woods and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sydney, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson that I’ve learned while being a freelance makeup artist is that owning a business is hard work, and you cannot do everything on your own. I’ve found that it is of essence to network and even work for free at times, if that means being in the same room as people who can present opportunities to you. An equally important lesson to me is to also never limit yourself because you won’t grow if you’re scared to put yourself out there.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well, I am a makeup artist. What sets me apart from other makeup artists in the DFW area and all over the world is my ability to connect with clients on a deeper level than a makeup application or transactional relationship. Every client is unique, I make sure I’m aware of my client’s beauty wants and need so that I can provide an unforgettable experience. I open my heart up to my clients, they get to know me and I get to know them!
My work is luxurious. When you come into my makeup studio, you know you’re about to leave feeling and looking flawless! My work is suitable for the everyday woman and the woman who likes to be beat to the makeup gods and red carpet ready!
I am most proud of my growth! To start off doing makeup in college, then doing makeup in my mom’s living room, to now having a makeup suite in Downtown Dallas is so rewarding. I know that I’m only going to grow more from here because I love what I do. I am also proud to have worked with celebrities, fashion stylists, and more!
I got to where I am today from putting in the work and putting myself out there to be recognized. Persistence is key. A huge turning point in my business came about when I started working with fashion stylist J. Bolin with Shop J Bolin. I have been able to gain a lot more recognition from day to day people, brands, and organizations in DFW who need a makeup artist. I am forever grateful for J. Bolin and his amazing team!
It wasn’t easy to get to where I am but I will say that it has been a gracious process.
Being that I have a degree, and am currently working on my Masters degree, I went through a constant battle of using my degree and just going to work or pursuing makeup as an entrepreneur. What I’ve found is that it is possible to have more than one passion, and luckily for me, I have had full circle moments in my business where I’ve networked and met clients who work in the career field that I too wish to work in some day. God makes no mistakes!
I over come challenges in my business by remembering who I am and knowing that I am built for this.
Lessons I’ve learned on the way include being confident no matter what, people are attracted to confidence and when they see that you’re confident in your work, they will too become confident in your work and abilities. I’ve also learned that you have to demand your respect. Service providers ensure a lot from assisting clients, so being firm on your prices and policies is necessary or people will run over you.
I want the world to know that my makeup is for everyone! I want people to know that I take my craft seriously, I am the best at what I do, and I’m only getting better. I want the world to catch up before the price has gone way up! (Haha)
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Okay now we’re getting into some fun! If I had a friend come to Dallas, I would take them to a few spots. For food, I love The Freeman in Deep Ellum, Ruins, Dodies, Fuel City and some other taco spots like Taqueria La Banquetta or Salsa Limon *chef’s kiss*. All of these spots are downtown or in proximity to downtown. For drinks, we already know Gloria’s is the spot, I love Pappadeaux drinks too! For a little turn up action or more fun, I’d take a friend to Harlowe, Bitter Ends, or even a museum or park in Dallas! I would take them to the Statler for some roof top bar action too! The best places to go if you’re not from Dallas is Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts, Harwood District, or any place in proximity to Downtown. That’s where I’m mostly at!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my friends, Stacy and DeAngela, they were some of the first people who believed in my ability as a makeup artist. They would urge me to do their makeup before events and parties when we were still in undergrad, they knew that I would be a great makeup artist before I did. I would like to shoutout to my number one supporter, my mom! My mom is who I get my creative/artistic abilities from, and she has always supported my journey and challenges me to be the best me. All in all, I have so many people to shoutout, so in short, I’ll just say thank you to every client I have serviced, every project that I’ve been able to work on, and every referral that I’ve gotten!
