We had the good fortune of connecting with Soe Saige and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Soe Saige, why did you pursue a creative career?
I believe it came to me innately, and honestly I believe most anyone has some type of interest or hobby that just clicks with them at some basic level. As a kid I loved radios and changing through stations playing whatever was hot in the early 2000s. I wrote my first rap in 3rd grade and showed it to my brother and he said it was cool. I think that turnt something up in me, fast forward I liked writing and reading all throughout elementary, then I got to middle school and got into underground hip hop which really opened my mind to believing I could really make music. A little more time goes by, my dad gets his hands on FL Studio 9 and he asks me to play around with it since he really didn’t know much about the music creating aspect of anything like that, mind you this is back in like 2010-2011, and well that turnt me up too. I start making beats then I grab my bestfriend at the time and another guy I know who rapped at school who’s actually another one of my closest friends now, then it was a wrap. We kept believing in it. I had a solid team and just like my brother and my dad seen something in me they did too, which is almost just as important as believing in yourself. I was never into manual labor or sports even though I excelled physically. Music stuck. Still does. I think it’s amazing how you can display your art and people rock with it without even having them in mind per say. A good amount of my music is therapeutic to myself or it was for me to express a feeling, so when someone hears that and tell me “hey I saved your song” that’s a crazy push when you really sit back and think about it. There’s a bigger picture to this art that I feel I’m actively giving into.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m building on my genre called SAIGEROCK. I have some mainstream influences but originally I came outta cloud rap and now I mix it with alternative. It definitely wasn’t easy breaking out of the “SoundCloud rap” barrier early on and the negative connotation with it but as I progressed and grew older and never gave in that set me apart from folks and put me onto a new tier with every drop I made. Taking criticism is a daily task be it good or bad, your maturity when it comes to it will speak louder, and then there are times where no response is a great response too. Just as they’re people who don’t like your art there’s people who do, and if not, there’s always someone who believes in you as long as you believe in yourself first. Every project I’ve made have been a new Soe Saige thus far, by subject or maturity. I’ve yet to expand on any previous projects directly by name or goal. I plan to broaden my visual portfolio this year so people can SEE me because I know they’ll hear me in the coming years. The most important lessons I’ve learned on this journey is invest in yourself first, don’t surround yourself with yes-men, listen to people intentions, and don’t give in always get better.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s always dope to venture into downtown (not only deep-ellum) and walk around. It’s a different world than South of Dallas where I reside, the people walking around and their problems don’t seem to correlate at all with what I perceive Dallas to be. We got some dope outlets out here too towards Arlington. I recently went to this place called the Lazy Dog & their food was the bomb. I regularly eat Henderson’s out in Lancaster. Every now and then me and my girl would stop at neighborhood parks and lakes just to step out on some semi-nature vibes. I go to the studio a lot.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my parents for giving me the space to be creative early on outside of sports whenever they did. Big shoutout to none other than Tony B & YG Flaco for being there for me for over a decade. Shoutout to Josiah for taking me to my first show and showing me how to feel to rock one, shoutout the Fronto Factory for all those studio times and my first show in Dallas. Greatest shoutout to my girlfriend and partner, Lex Christion, whose an amazing model- yall watch out for her. Lastly, shoutout to all my peers out in Kansas who BEEN rocking with me and the bonds I made out there.
