We had the good fortune of connecting with Shonquinta McCray and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shonquinta, how do you think about risk?
WOW TAKING RISK…where do I start,
When most people think about RISK TAKING, fear comes to mind, because when taking risk anything could happen. When I think about RISK TAKING I become FEARLESS, BOLD, ENCOURAGED, and ADVENTUROUS. In order to take on that RISK it’s important to have a daring mindset. I always knew I would have my own business I just never knew exactly what. I’ve always had a thing for fashion so I knew it would be something trendy, or along the lines of. Everyone wants to be an entrepreneur, so there is always going to be someone out there doing the same thing you are doing right? Thats a risk within its self! I got my LLC a year ago but still had no idea of what was destined for me in that moment. Hair has always been my thing, and I don’t mind paying top dollar for it either, “its the quality for me”. I can say it was never my dream to be a custom wig designer either, but its bringing out the BEST in me. In June I took a risk by spending thousands of dollars to take a sewing work shop class, never even touched a sewing machine a day in my life…risky right? As frustrating and tedious as hit can be, TODAY I take pride in my fine lines and getting behind my sewing machine is therapeutic for me. So I say that to say this TAKE THAT RISK…its okay to be scared, its okay to fail, if you don’t, how will you prevail!
“My wigs are artifacts to encourage and foster continuous transformation.
So, ask yourself who you want to be, choose your wig, and step into your new life”
RISKY RIGHT!?
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I MAKE WIGS SWEETIE…
I am a custom wig designer located in Dallas, Tx. My goal is to build a brand that stands out from the rest and leave you feeling lavish when it comes designing the perfect wig for you. I want to cater to everyone of my clients, build a bond with them and understand what it is exactly they are wanting. I love meeting new people from all walks of life, I think it is very important to be professional when running a business because I enjoy feedback and of course I want all of my lavish babes to tell a friend come back. When my clients put on their wig i want them to feel like they are on top of the world, beautiful, sexy, vivacious, confident, and empowered to be whoever they want to be. Although designing wigs is therapeutic for me, it has not been easy, trial and error does come in to play and trust me when I tell you getting hair stuck in my sewing needle, having to redo a whole wig, trying to make sure no lumps and bumps come in to play is not fun either. Long nights, early mornings still working a full time job, being a mom its tough, but what keeps me going is knowing my potential, where I want to be, and will be. I love to see others succeed and BE GREAT, it motivates the hustle in me to take it to the next level. I think it helps that I’m super sweet, firm, and bold people just gravitate to me. I used to often compare myself to other small business owners which can be very intimidating, but I have to think back to myself this is all still new to me. 6 months in and I am already here on ShoutOutDFW so somebody is always watching. I take pride in my work, and I’m so blessed to be able to what I love and be myself while doing it. You want to be a BOSS, it starts with YOU, don’t wait, time waits on no man or woman. Take that leap of FAITH, do it TODAY!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my friend first to Down Town Dallas, probably more then once, its so pretty at night seeing all the lights and not to mention one of my favorite eating spots “Vidorra” has the best Birria tacos, chips&salsa and drinks you could think of, and any friend of mine loves a good taco lol. another great spot downtown that’s a lil more business casual dress code in-forced, with nicely plated comfort foods, southern style, like fried chicken and lobster tails, shrimp and grits, lamb chops, greens, black eyed peas, Mac&cheese you name it…”True Kitchen + Kocktails” good vibes and a mixture of music. Moving on to “King Spa Dallas” where we will go relax, kick our feet up and enjoy a nice massage, and because I’m a big kid at heart we can’t pass up “Pinstacks” I love a good bowling match, lazar tag, and bumper cars, good for the kids to tag along. Love a mini shopping spree so “Galleria Mall” is where we will also be. The best mall in the city if you ask me! “Klyde Warren Park” where we can have a beautiful picnic if the weather is right, try the many food trucks they have out most of the time, great for dogs and fun for the kids. Last but not least “Painting With A Twist” we will go and allow our artistic side come to life, while creating colorful memories, sipping wine and having a good time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First I want to thank God, without him my FAITH along this journey would not be the same. My friends and family are nothing shy when it comes to cheering me on, pushing me when I’m tired and just want to be done, or even roughing me up when I’m wrong. My two beautiful, smart, loving, silly kids Jabarien 13yr and Rainee 4yr. They keep me going, to want better for them, to be able to build a foundation so they can have a better life. Walter who has been a great friend, provider, father and father figure to our kids. He is definitely someone I cherish and look up too, has taught me many lessons when it comes to life and standing on what you believe in. My mom Shonda & pops Ted who birth me in this world, never gave up on me, never left me, loved me unconditionally, pushed me to my full potential, dream BIG to be whatever I want to be. When you have real people in your life that support you no matter what, genuinely care about you, your growth, your well-being…hold on to them, its not very many! Im so GRATEFUL and BLESSED to be where I am today, but EAGER and HUNGRY for what my bright future holds for me.
