We had the good fortune of connecting with Shemekia Lawrence and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shemekia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Entrepreneurship has been an ambition of mine for as long as I can remember. The desire to attain work-life balance increased over the years as I spent countless hours working in Corporate Finance. Starting my own business was the only way to control my time and enable me to spend the time with my family I desired.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Bumble Bee Blinds of Frisco is a provider of end-to-end custom window treatment services from design consultation to ordering, installation, and completion. We offer interior window treatments of all types for a variety of budgets – draperies, blinds, shutters, shades, and motorization as well as exterior motorized shades for patios and outdoor living spaces. We work directly with commercial and residential clients as well as with industry partners such as interior designers, contractors, homebuilders, and realtors. As the first operational franchisee in Texas and the longest-tenured franchisee in the nation, we knew the challenges of launching a virtually unknown brand. However, we were up for the challenge and excited about the opportunity to serve the most sought-after zip codes in North Texas. Though the road has not been without challenges, it is already one of my most rewarding endeavors ever!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A week-long visit with best friends in DFW sound amazing!

We’d start the week with lunch and shopping at Legacy West. It’s close to home and the options are endless for both. The following day we’d enjoy breakfast at a local restaurant in Prosper that my family and I love to visit, The Gin, before heading out for a day of relaxation. The first stop would be a massage and facial at Spa Habitat in Plano and then a short walk over to Seasons 52 for an enjoyable lunch. Entertainment would be a must for night 2, so we’d find ourselves back in Plano at Sambuca 360. Day 3 we would begin with a nice brisk walk on one the lovely trails in the area and return home to make breakfast smoothies! All my besties love Mexican cuisine. One of my all-time faves is Uncle Julio’s and the Keller Springs location is on the route to our Day 3 shopping expedition at the Galleria Dallas. Because of the business I’m in, I love to visit new developments and take in the various window treatment designs you’ll find in model homes. DFW has no shortage of new developments, so the options are plentiful. This would be the next and final outing for Day 3. There’s so much to see in downtown Dallas, Day 4 would certainly include a trip there. One of my absolute favorite places to visit is Klyde Warren park. This was a staple for my family and I during COVID. It allowed us time to change our scenery and enjoy fresh air safely. Luckily there are various dining options from food trucks to more Mexican cuisine and of course sweet treats. While in the area, we’d visit the Dallas Museum of Art and have dinner at Paradiso in the Bishops Arts District. Day 5 would include family time and rest. Day 6 would be all about the STAR! We’d start the day with brunch at the Common Table located at the Star in Frisco and do afternoon shopping at Monkee’s of Frisco. Dinner would likely be prepared at home. Sunday would include church and goodbyes. DFW has no shortage of great places to visit and cuisine to enjoy. I always love hosting friends and family while visiting.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, my DFW family and friends all deserve a shoutout! Without them, I would not be the first operational franchisee in Texas and the longest-tenured franchisee in the nation.
