We had the good fortune of connecting with Scotty Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scotty, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Blaque Kotton Clothing is more than just another clothing brand. Blaque Kotton is a creative movement created for the elevation of our ancestors
who believed in the dream of family unity—between fathers and sons,
mothers and daughters, brothers and sisters—but most importantly, unity
among mankind. Blaque Kotton is a clothing company that dares to be
different and unique in a way that shares the greatest achievements of
African Americans and their rich culture and rich history. Blaque Kotton
shares the journey of those who came before us and pays homage to
those whose sacrifices pushed our people to become more than great
despite the harsh, ever-present realities of our past.
More important, Blaque Kotton is a clothing company that wants to share
the history of a great people whose voices have become nothing more
than a mere whisper in the wind. Blaque Kotton Clothing would like to give
power and breathe life back into those very voices by sharing the images of
our legendary people. We’re a brand committed to reuniting the past with
the present, bringing forth the greatest apparel for everyone everywhere.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What makes my clothing unique and different is its vision. I thought
about how the heroes of the past used to work the fields and were
given the harsh task of picking cotton. I thought about how a Black
person’s afro resembles a black cotton bulb, much different from the
white bulbs they suffered to collect. That’s when it came to me: “African
Americans were just like the cotton they picked, they were valuable for
many uses.” It seemed like a purpose by God.
ng what you do?
I want people to remember the sacrifices that were made by our
ancestors and the harsh realities they endured to pave a way for
generations of people who come after them. I want to pay home to
African American people everywhere; I want to embed their leg
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Most definitely would have to go to top golf!! I would take them to trinity Grove. We would visit XOXO. Deep Ellum would be the high light of the weekend. We would visit the museum and head to the stock yards in Fort worth tx.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The person most influential in making Blaque Kotton a success is Latoya Morris. Without her ambition and drive, I don’t think Blaque
Kotton would have gotten off the ground. Jackie Fennell also played
a significant role in the transition of this company with her shared
resources and inspiration. And of course, founder Scotty Johnson,
whose vision of Blaque Kotton made everything happen. Also I would love to thank bootiful me founder Theresa Fennell
