We had the good fortune of connecting with Rumeal Melton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rumeal, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor in the small success that I’ve had is that I’m not afraid to fail or be wrong. I’ve never been the best at anything but I’ve always worked my way into spaces be mentioned among the best. Failing isn’t the end but only a teachable moment. In podcasting or the interviewing space, you won’t know everything so learning in preparation or asking questions only helps your understanding and also makes you relatable to guest or listens who may feel hesitant to ask certain questions based off the current culture we live in.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The things that keep me busy with the podcast are recruiting people to come on and studying the content for the coming episode. There are so many variables to make an episodes go, A lot of people think its just talking on the mic and saying whatever when in actuality, the work starts when the next episode wraps, Its so much you have to be aware of. What does my personal life look like, what is a topic in the sports, politics, pop culture, film, podcasting, music, Then have to decide what makes the show and what doesn’t make the show, Im very hard on myself daily so the expectation is always high. Now granted, you dont stick the landing every time but thats the intention. Anybody who’s growing a brand to platform understands that the work never stops but you have to be able to compartmentalize everything to be consistent which will lead to opportunities and overall success.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Sadly, I’m not very active in the streets and I have the tastebuds of a toddler so I don’t eat a lot of foods. I always recommend Velvet Taco to anybody who’s visiting. The few spots that I have been are always fun with my friends are Stirr, The Backyard, Punch Bowl Social, Sidecar Social and OT Tavern for Trappy Thursdays . its a lot of places that I still need to go but others than that, I’m either at home, the studio or with my family
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a few individuals who deserve recognition. My family and friends comes first and foremost because of there encouragement, keeping me grounded and allowing me a space to voice my concerns and fears. Another person is Jeff Wallace of the Putting People on Game podcast because he was the first person in the Dallas podcast space to embrace me and tell me how good I was before I believed it. I have to thank my hometown of Bastrop, LA for molding me into who I am. I want to thank Mark McCray & Tony Scott from Podcast suites. They have become like mentors to me and have created a studio which is basically like my second home. Id be remiss if I didn’t mention my podcast Heroes Charlamagne Tha God and Andrew Shultz because Brilliant idiots is where I learned a lot and even started wanting to podcast and interview people for a living. Lastly, my co-host Wayne Hawkins, been my guy since 2008 in college. We’ve literally been through it all and like on the podcast, has laughed through it all and create more memories along the way
