We had the good fortune of connecting with Rosie Kaplan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rosie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started Brushed Restorations by Rosie because I wanted to prove to myself that I had the power to make my life anything and everything I want it to be. The year leading up to starting Brushed Restorations I did a lot of soul searching and with the help of a few people, I realized how powerful self confidence is. I started to believe in myself in ways that I had not done before. I was turning 40 and felt compelled to make 2020 about pushing myself in ways I did not think possible. I am a wife and a mother of 4 kids so often I found that I always did for others and didn’t really put myself first. I wanted to show myself that I could do it and be able to share my story to hopefully inspire and give that power to someone else.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I began my creative journey going to The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, in Los Angeles, CA. Shorty after, I started a family and found myself working in the accounting field supporting the family business. I began refinishing furniture about 4 years ago which brought me back to my creative passion. I love creating one of a kind pieces that can be showcased in homes not only as useful furniture but also as art pieces. I work with several mediums to incorporate into my furniture and art to really set them apart. I specialize in paint pours, resin and alcohol ink. I have self taught myself most of what I have done. My paint pours on furniture are one of my favorite things to do. I combine colors and different techniques that produce beautiful pieces. I then use resin to top coat the paint pour which then brings it to another level. There will never be another piece like it. I started using the resin to create serving trays, coasters, phone holders, business card holders, and one of a kind hardware for my furniture. I then discovered the world of alcohol ink! I continue to push myself and discover that my abilities are limitless. Images of my paint pours and alcohol ink art can be found on Piece Prints. I am grateful for the time I spent building the family business but I know I am meant to create my art. I want people to know that is is never too late to start doing something you love and have a passion for. I will continue to push myself and grow as an artist. I am so proud to be able to show my kids that if you believe in yourself and work hard you can make anything happen.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am not in Dallas but close by in Houston. It has been so long since we have been able to live a “normal life”. I can’t wait for the day that we can be out and about again. As a mom of 4 getting out with my husband on a date night or a night out with the girls is so important!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a few people I would like to recognize. My husband, Todd, has been so supportive of me from day 1. He tells me often that he is proud of what I have built and loves to watch me do something that I am so passionate about. I learned a lot from him and I am so thankful that I have a partner that understands how important it is to go after your dream and do something you love. My TRIBE. When I first decided to start my business I joined a coaching group where I met some amazing women that have become my friends. I am thankful to have them on this journey. It is so nice to have friends in the industry who want to see you grow and don’t look at you like competition. Last but not least, Sherry. She is someone that came into my life a few years ago who helped me realize I have the power to choose happy. I am forever grateful for her because I have chosen happy ever since!
