We had the good fortune of connecting with Robyn Needham and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robyn, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
That’s a great question! I actually use a weekly planner that allows me to write down my daily habits and check them off each week. I feel like the little habits are what propel you further into reaching your bigger goals. Currently, I have a lot of daily marketing habits such as reaching out to 15 new people on LinkedIn each day, commenting on 5 LinkedIn posts, posting myself two days a week and writing 5 direct marketing emails each day. Other habits are cold reading, searching for the latest auditions and doing a 5 minute workout.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an actor and voiceover artist working out of my home studio in Grapevine, Texas. I’m super proud of how far I’ve come in the last year with my voiceover business and all the people I’ve been able to meet and get to know through my marketing efforts. A lot of people don’t realize, but as an artist you really are a business owner and marketing your talents to the world is your job. They didn’t teach me about marketing when I was in school so it’s been quite the adventure as I’m learning how to put myself out there and make a name for myself. None of it has been easy, but as they say if it were easy then everybody would be doing it. I always think it’s funny when I hear of someone being called an overnight success. There is no such thing! I’ve been performing for over 20 years now and if some day my name is in lights then it’s because of the 20 years of hard work that has gone before it, not a miracle discovery of my talent. I have a magnet on my refrigerator that says never, never, never give up. I am extremely inspired by that quote. You have to love the work and be willing to do the work otherwise it’s way too difficult of a career path as a performance artist and you’d probably be better off doing something else.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh boy, this is difficult! Well, I live in Grapevine so I’d definitely start off on Main Street. Hopefully it’s around Christmastime so they can see the Christmas Capital of Texas! We have so many favorite wineries and patios in the area. Plus, we can’t forget Hotel Vin! This downtown Grapevine hotel has live music almost every night of the week and a full upscale food court modeled after an old train station. Speaking of trains, a ride from Grapevine to Fort Worth on the train might be fun and bonus if there’s a theme and music! I’m obsessed with small towns so I’d probably take them to downtown McKinney to walk around and then take a drive to Granbury to enjoy the square. Granbury has such a great art and wine festival in the spring and they also do a holiday tour of homes that is magnificent. I’m not from Texas originally, so going to eat at Reata in Fort Worth feels like a true Texas experience every time I’m there. Plus the improv troupe Four Day Weekend does a show right next door! Other places I love to explore are the Dallas Arboretum, the Dallas Farmer’s Market. basically any local brewery, and the beautiful winery estates up in the Celina area, I hope my best friend comes ready to eat!!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people. I actually didn’t realize the importance of having a good mentor into way later in life. I feel like good role models and finding those people who have actually gone before you in a field you are interested in is so important.

I have great voiceover coaches, a supportive online voiceover community and my accountability group in Dallas to thank for success in my work.

In addition to all these people I find so much inspiration by reading books and listening to podcasts. Whether it’s a motivational story, a book on business tactics or an actor memoir, I love diving into a good book and often go back to reference them.
