Meet Reachelle Kacz

We had the good fortune of connecting with Reachelle Kacz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Reachelle, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The ocean has always grounded me. As a young girl, I loved dolphins, but that fascination grew into awe for the entire underwater world—from coral reefs, sharks, and sea turtles to the mystery of the uncharted deep.
I earned my SCUBA certification in college and have since explored waters in Aruba, Greece, Hawaii, Mexico, the Keys, and Bermuda. But my most recent dive in the Keys was sobering: coral bleaching made clear the urgency of protecting what we love.
On land, I’ve worked in e-commerce and cosmetics for the past five years. Turning 30, I noticed changes in my scalp and turned to dry shampoo, only to find existing products irritating and unsatisfying. In 2024, I set out to create something better—a loose, non-aerosol dry shampoo made with simple, natural ingredients.
That idea became CALYX Roots. In coral, the calyx is the hard, cup-like skeleton secreted by reef-building polyps. It anchors each tiny animal to the reef, protects its soft body, and serves as the foundation for entire coral colonies to grow. To me, it symbolizes balance, resilience, and the roots we must protect in the ocean.
CALYX Roots is more than a product—it’s a commitment. A portion of proceeds will support reef conservation, helping protect corals and the creatures that rely on them. CALYX Roots revives your roots while giving back to the “roots” of our oceans.
Together, we can make waves—for your hair and for the planet.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
CALYX Roots is still very small and completely bootstrapped. One of my biggest challenges has been overcoming self-doubt and pushing past that feeling of imposter syndrome. I’m incredibly grateful for the supportive people in my life who remind me that what I’m building matters and help me keep my confidence up.
I’m proud of the relationships I’ve made along the way, including a recent collaboration with a brand I deeply respect, The Dive Compass.
Most of all, I want the world to know there’s a haircare brand out there that not only cares for your scalp, but also gives back to ocean conservation.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to have queso at Las Palmas before walking to AAC for a Dallas Stars game. We’d probably take a stroll through the Dallas Aboretum or catch a yoga class led by Alex Grimm. If it’s football season, we’d definitely catch a game at the Nodding Donkey and grab a night cap at the Alcove wine bar.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give this shoutout to Mary Van, Founder of Mineralogie and Demaur Cosmetics. She is steadfast in her business, endlessly giving, and always open to helping others grow. No matter what challenges come her way, Mary overcomes them with grace and determination. She has taught me so much about the cosmetic industry, but even more, her philosophy on life and generosity of spirit continue to inspire me.
