We had the good fortune of connecting with Proenka Roque and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Proenka, why did you pursue a creative career?
From a very young age I was always drawn by creativity. Was fortunate enough to have an amazing support system, my parents would encourage my interest anyway they could. I aspired to be like my mom some day. She was an Arts and Crafts instructor back in our home town of Mexico. Everything she did peaked my interest from painting, sowing, clay molding to crafting the most beautiful rosaries that would take us days to create. After her passing when I was fourteen years old. Decided to dedicate my time to the only other thing that brought me happiness which was art. It was what reminded me of my mom and what kept me going. It’s extremely rewarding to be able to do what I love full time. Art is who I am, its how I express myself and it is what I am passionate about.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I graduated from college I began to create content for my Instagram and took on a year long challenge to post daily and it has evolved through out time. An important factor to my accomplishments has been the consistency of my artwork on social media. 2019 undeniably became the year of growth but with that came some challenges. Was fortunate enough to have been invited to participate in art shows year around. Before taking on that opportunity. Was uncomfortable with the idea of socializing with big crowds and with time I grew fond of the atmosphere. My art received some great feed back and it began to flourish. Eventually became a Certified Art Instructor. In which I would live paint, during that time made some great friends. The most significant thing about what I currently do (portrait painting) is it allows me to connect with others on a more personal level. The pieces that I create have sentimental value and each one tells a story. In most cases the portraits are made in remembrance of a loved one. The reaction of those who receive it is my absolute favorite part because I can relate. I remember creating a piece for my dad back in college. A portrait of my mom and him, it took me almost 2 months to make. Once completed could not put into words the amount of joy it brought to my heart and the reaction from my dad was unforgettable.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Deep Ellum would be a great place to explore for its scenery. It’s filled with popping colors and amazing murals created by talented artist. The Art Museum of Dallas is also a must it’s quite interesting to learn the meaning behind each artifact. Klyde Warren Park across the street has the coolest activities. The food trucks and events hosted make it a place to visit. I am a foodie at heart and of Mexican treats especially. My favorite Mangonadas are from a shop in Plano called Frutería Tropical. They have a wide varierty of treats. Couldn’t end the day without eating some of the best burgers around, Jakes Burgers! They are delicious and the drive-in experience is great.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family along with my boyfriend have been very encouraging, they have always believed in my talent and for that I am immensely greatful.

Without you I would not be where I am today. A special thank you to my teacher, biggest supporter and my inspiration my mom, I love you all.
