Meet Pete & Hanna Robbins | Fishing Travel Consultants

We had the good fortune of connecting with Pete & Hanna Robbins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pete & Hanna, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Fishing and traveling have given us a huge amount of satisfaction and pleasure. We realized that some similarly-situated people might enjoy those same experiences, but might not know how to go about making them happen. There was no central, objective clearinghouse for that information, and we could be that resource. In doing so, it would enhance our own ability to travel and meet new people. Many of our closest friends were people we would otherwise not have met but for the shared passion. The ability to earn some money from the effort is a bonus.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Pete: I began writing about fishing accidentally in 2001. As a full-time attorney, I’d always worked under the assumption that I was a “non-creative” but writing gave me the opportunity to realize that creativity keeps me energized. When I write about something no one has considered, or in a different way, I get the equivalent of a “runner’s high.”

Hanna: I had never fished until I met Pete 17 years ago and now it’s my passion, too. It just goes to show how much of a role luck and random encounters play in our lives. What other passions and interests are you missing out on by not getting out in the world?

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would take them to Isla Parida, Panama, home of Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge. A close friend introduced us to it last year and we’ve already been twice — with a third trip on the horizon. Imagine Gilligan’s Island but with all of the creature comforts of home (more, actually — imagine endless sushi-grade tuna!) and the world’s greatest sportfishing. I think even the non-angler can appreciate how special this place is. It’s safe, yet feels remote, and it’s a five-star experience.

Other than that, we think every American needs to see Alaska at some point. It’s the most exotic trip you can take without leaving the US, and you can enjoy it on any budget.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We’ve had so many mentors along the way — in fact, we invariably learn something from everyone we meet, not just formal instructors.

Pete — my parents don’t share any of my interests, but they always stressed the importance of passion in anything you do, and that’s my calling card.

Hanna — my parents made less than many of their neighbors in our upscale neighborhood but we never lacked for anything. Pete and I will never be wealthy, but we have a wealth of experiences beyond our means, and that’s their influence shining through.
