We had the good fortune of connecting with Patty Brito and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patty, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
To me, work life balance is a utopia. I think I’ve never met someone who has actually accomplished it. In fact, I know many people (myself included) who have tried so hard to achieve this thing called “work-life balance” and often fall short; ending up feeling exhausted, guilty, disappointed, incapable, frustrated. After many years of failed attempts, I had to come up with a new approach at handling life in a way that I would feel less stressed and more at peace. First, recognizing the fact that life IS HARD when you are living the right way, has giving me a lot of relief. I stopped fighting and questioning, and started accepting this reality as something I cannot change. Then, when my day starts, I write a ‘to do list’ sorted by priorities. Doing this helps me have a clear view of what to do each day and how to do it. Understanding that my health (physically and mentally) needs to be at the top of my to do list, has been one of the most important lessons this past year has giving me. When one is OK, our loved ones are OK. It hasn’t been perfect, nothing is, but at least I get to go to sleep knowing that all of what matters most have been taken care of.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My professional journey has not been easy. To get where we want takes hard work, persistency and commitment. How have I overcomed the challenges? By giving my best, even if I’m scared. After a while I’ve learned that feeling scared of doing something challenging is part of life, part of our humanity. Recognizing fear and still moving forward, has giving me power. Knowing that, no matter the outcome, you will either thrive or learn. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
