We had the good fortune of connecting with Otara Nwachie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Otara, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
My parents come from Sri-Lanka. I was born Dallas Tx. My parents were given in arranged marriage that did not end up working out. A few months after I was born my mom took me and left to Sri-Lanka. Being raised in south east Asia young girls aren’t given the opportunity to learn or explore their independence. I always felt like I was silenced or shut down or not taken seriously.. nothing I had or felt mattered and so coming to the states at 18 I knew what I wanted I had a vision for the way I wanted my life to play out. It also made me the not worry about people’s judgements or opinions when I decided to peruse things with no money or as a brand new mom. No’s and silence don’t scare me anymore they motivate me
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was raised being told I didn’t have to go to school if I didn’t want to because essentially my purpose in life was “marry good” have kids take care of man children house! I came here at 18 and worked always worked 2/3 jobs hooters bottle service flight attendant lash tech I worked to pay rent and go home to an empty apartment but I was SO HAPPY! When I met my husband everything moved pretty fast within the year we had a baby and married. My old life was DEAD, My life changed over night no more night outs no more friends just my baby and my husband but one part of my life was thriving and the other was dying I tried bath bombs and that didn’t work but I learned so many what NOT TO DO’s. in 2019 I started KID’in AROUND. A trendy kids e-commerce store. Before I knew it the business was thriving I had found something I was enjoying something that I could work on after giving so much of my self to husband kids home during the day.. It was a learning experience but I was enjoying it.. in 2022 I spent almost every weekend doing pop ups at Legacy West. when your at a pop up every weekend a supportive partner is important.. so thankyou babe. But at some point in 2022 I started itching for something more.. I started dipping my feet into the event planning industry it was scary starting a new business when I had one that was doing well.. I just knew I was always going to have limitations with the boutique. but event planning!!! the sky was the limit. funny story everytime I visit new york city.. and i’m standing at Time square I’ve always wondered what I had to do to have my name my work on a billboard.. I think I finally found it.. 6 months into event planning we are growing and we are thriving..
I am still a very small business but from where I started I have come so far, this was not easy by any means but I never gave up on myself I always found a way and I never take no for an answer. I am also extremely particular about the people I surround myself with. everyone in my circle is amazing at what they do at how they communicate at giving good advice at motivating at uplifting and encouraging and celebrating. and that is so important your going to have so many bumps in the road but as all long as you have good people to give you good advice to encourage you positively you cannot fail! Never ever give up
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So I am the worst tour guide my friends are actually the girls you want to know for the most trending restaurants hookah bars etc. But leave it to me we would Eat shop and hang out at Legacy West! It’s my favorite place to be. You want a little botox or filler refresh we can go visit Tetchie at Lemmon ave. Mexican food we are taking a trip to uncle julio’s, after word go get our skinny girl massages at the Tox. Maybe a little girls night trip to a local hotel downtown.. I don’t know about much going on in the streets. But it’s not what you do it’s who you do it with right
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband first and fore most! I could tell this man I wanted to explore skydiving tomorrow and he would ask how he can help.. He works full time my work is mostly on the weekends and he has helped and financed my dreams more than I can thank him for! I love you babe.
My girl friends.. my circle is so small but every last one of these women have pushed encouraged and motivated me. your core circle is SO IMPORTANT for you to make it through the trials and tribulations of life..
Lastly my sisters for always being available no matter how far apart we are no time zone keeps up apart
