We had the good fortune of connecting with Nytecia Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nytecia, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
“What’s for me is for me and nothing can stop that.” I think this would be ideal, but i completely disagree. I personally believe what’s for us is AVAILABLE to us, and nothing can stop that. But I do think if we are not available for it, prepared for it, or if we don’t recognize it’s for us, we can absolutely miss out on what was for us. I think it happens to the best of us, but believing it’ll just come to us regardless is an easy way out of doing the work it takes to be ready for it. Faith without works is dead!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an entrepreneur and hairstylist located in Frisco, Tx. I specialize in protective styling and natural hair care, such as braids, dreadlocks, silk presses, embracing the natural hair pattern and much more! What’s most important to me in my salon setting, is being able to be a peaceful, safe, and uplifting environment for my clients. Nothing fills me with more joy than to be a listening ear when its needed, to give advice the best I can, and within all of that having someone leave feeling even more confident then before they came. I originally gained an interest in cosmetology when I was a sophomore in High School who began learning more about my own natural hair. In that process I began styling my hair more, having lots more fun with it, thus gaining the confidence and anxiousness to style my friends hair as well. I started to fall in love with the art, and decided to attend Toni&Guy cosmetology school in the summer of 2016 after graduating high school. The methods, terminology, and education that came from Toni&Guy definitely catapulted me into the success of my business now. Being surrounded by many supportive friends, clients and mentors has grown my business rapidly more than I could ever do alone. The challenges that come with being self employed that I had to and still am learning as I grow involve financial discipline and responsibility, setting work boundaries, making sure to stay involved in continued education, and never getting so comfortable with good that I don’t chase great. Trends constantly change, the next new thing is always around the corner so staying up to date can be challenging. But, what has helped me most in overcoming certain challenges is reminding myself to keep a steady pace, and to not compare my business to the business of others in a way that demotes the hard work I’ve put in or am able to achieve. It is not easy stepping out on faith and going after your dreams, its quite difficult. But what’s even more difficult is sitting with the heaviness of regret in your stomach watching someone else attain your dreams. We hold ourselves back more than anyone and anything else. I love what I do, I’m beyond grateful for all of the people God has placed in my life to get me to where I am, and I will continue to do any and everything I can to be a positive impact to any and everyone that takes a seat in my chair…and of course have them leaving feeling and looking bomb as ever!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost all glory to God for any successful area of my life! Studying the scriptures and being involved in ministry has aided in me having a strong foundation of faith. That faith has allowed me to defeat fear in chasing my dreams. Many books such as: “Boundaries”, Henry and John Townsend. “The Millionaire Next Door”, Thomas J. Stanley. “Fear is Not The boss of You”, Jennifer Allwood, and so many more reads have been a blessing to my journey. My friends, family and community have been nothing short of supporting and I am forever grateful for that. The list goes on…Once you open your eyes you realize God has placed everything around you intentionally for your well benefit.
