We had the good fortune of connecting with Noemi Mendez-Hyams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Noemi, how do you think about risk?
It was difficult at first for me to start my own counseling private practice. The comfort and predictability of a paycheck, having medical insurance and retirement benefits were all aspects of a career that my parents always stressed were very important. It felt too risky, at first, to not have these in place while starting my own business. I built my private practice in small steps. I started working on Saturdays in addition to a 40 hour job in my field. When Saturdays became full, i opened up a day and then two days during the week. I eventually had the opportunity to work part time at my position while I continued to build my practice. The time came when I couldn’t grow my practice any longer unless I dedicated all of my time and left the comfort of my part time paycheck. My practice continues to grow and now I look back and realize I should have done it sooner! I am still able to save for retirement, I have medical insurance and I am able to work less and earn more income than when I worked a full 40 hour work week. I have more flexibility with my schedule as well which helps when raising a family and having to care for elderly parents. I had to ask myself one question: “What’s the worst that could happen?”. When I realized that even if the worst were to happen – that my practice wouldn’t succeed, I would be able to handle it and just return to a regular paying job. I told myself I’d figure it out and thinks would be okay. The biggest hurdle was my own mindset / thoughts. The risk paid off and I have a much better work / life balance.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am Licensed Professional Counselor and have my own private practice in downtown Wylie, TX. I specialize in treating trauma utilzing Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is a non-drug, non-hypnosis, non-evasive and evidence-based psychotherapy procedure. The therapist guides the client in concentrating on a troubling memory or emotion while moving the eyes rapidly back and forth by following the therapist’s fingers. It is a well-researched and highly developed way to work with people who have experienced disturbing events in their lives and for whom the bad feelings, images and memories don’t just go away.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Perot Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, Reunion Tower and a sports game of any kind – Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers or Dallas Stars depending on the season.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My spouse has been my biggest supporter through out my journey in opening my private practice. He has helped in so many ways from household chores to advice and just listening to all my ideas with patience and an open mind.
