We had the good fortune of connecting with Nöelle Overturf and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nöelle, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
From the moment I could hold a pen, art has always been an outlet for me when time allowed. When my son was born in 2018 I found myself wanting to paint more and experiment with abstract work while I stayed home with him. I suddenly fell in love with the process of abstract. I am a classic over-thinker, rule follower, and (hardly perfect) perfectionist. Painting “outside the lines” allowed me to get messy, find my own way of doing things and make mistakes I knew weren’t going to be the end of the world. This outlet gave me something I could use to express myself as a new mom. I began wanting to paint during every free moment I had! Even though I have my own gallery space now, my thought process behind my business is the same as it was back in 2018. I’m a Mama of a 5 year old and a two year old who loves to create art to help express my emotions, bring joy to others through color and encourage my kids as they grow up to make time to do something they love!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an abstract artist in Fort Worth and my medium is mostly acrylic paint. I paint on large and small canvases (the bigger the canvas the better!) and I really enjoy sourcing vintage frames to put my work in as well. All of my paintings are original and there will never be two pieces exactly the same! Each piece is made with the hope to bring joy to someone’s life and serve as an heirloom for their family.
One of the most special things I get to do is live-paint at events. Years ago my sweet friend, Jennifer Wright, took a chance on me and asked if I would be interested in live-painting for a St. Jude charity event auction and of course I said YES. Since then I have had the pleasure of live-painting at numerous events and thoroughly enjoy connecting with others in a different environment!
One of my proudest business moments was the day of my storefront grand opening this past January 20th, also my 36th birthday! I operate mostly by appointments since I have two little ones who keep me on my toes. My husband has an office at the shop as well and I have a studio space in the back where I do all of my painting. We have a little playroom built in for our kids and a fridge full of juice boxes. I always like to remind people that kids are welcome and encouraged to come in the shop! I have had some of the best conversations with little artists between the ages of 2-12 years within the past 4 months than I ever have in my life! I am so excited for what the rest of the year will bring – having extra space allows me to get more creative in my releases and ventures. I am particularly excited about one thing coming up, but I can’t spill the tea just yet!
I’m still learning to balance life while running a small business. I’m very upfront about expectations and what all I am able to work in for custom orders. I learned this the hard way back in the beginning of my journey by over committing to commissions and I started to get overwhelmed. I’ve found a pretty good rhythm over the years, and that just means having to say no’, or ‘not yet’ sometimes.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many fun places to visit in Fort Worth! Our first stop for dinner would have be Joe T. Garcia’s to experience the food, ambiance and have a margarita. We’d definitely need to visit the stockyards, Wild Acre Beer Garden and the botanical gardens during the week. My husband and I love playing pickleball, so we’d have to hit up Courtside Kitchen one afternoon and then end the day at Zoli’s to let our kids play on the playground.
I’m a sucker for hunting for gems at the antique mall, so we’d have to visit Montgomery Antique Mall or The Mercantile before heading to Clearfork for more shopping. A few other fun things we’ve done is Sandbox Virtual Reality off Crockett Street – I’ve never screamed and laughed so much at once! We also love going to Four Day Weekend downtown! There are so many cool spots in our city that I could just go on and on!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh goodness, there are so many people I would like to give a shout out to! I’ll start with my family, specifically my husband, Zach, and my parents. They are always the first to encourage and support me in my dreams. They consistently show up and ask what I need when I have a long to-do list…which is often! I couldn’t do any of this without them.
I will also always remember those who believed in my work from the start when I was still figuring out what I was doing. I still think about each one of them to this day – how they bought my work, shared it with their friends, offered me pop-up & live-painting opportunities, and cheered me on as I found my way in my new adventure. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you!
