We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was blessed with a grandmother that was not only an excellent cook but a great baker as well. I observed her skills in the kitchen growing up. I began baking at the age of 12. I started with making biscuits from scratch every Saturday morning for my family. I have always had a love for cooking and baking but stopped baking for many years. In 2019 I decided to use my baking skills and began Four Girls and a Guy, named after my 4 daughters and 1 son.

I would get so much joy from the smiles on people faces after they would eat my desserts.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have an extensive background in the field of phone based Customer Service for various companies. Though these roles were sometimes difficult, it set the foundation for my business and taught me the importance of providing a great customer service experience for my customers.

I am most excited about future growth plans for my business. I am always thinking about new ideas and products to bring to my customers. Additionally, I am excited about future plans of owning a dessert trailer and store front.

I overcome any challenges in my business by grasping the reality of me being my own CEO. While corporate America taught me many valuable skills that I currently use in my business, it simultaneously robbed me of my creativity and fostered a certain fear of making decisions. I overcame these challenges by owning and acknowledging that I am my own CEO, and whenever a change or policy revision is needed, I am empowered to make that change. Was this mindset shift easy? Undoing years of systemic programming is never easy but very necessary in business.

The most valuable lesson that I have learned along the way, is ALWAYS be flexible and retain the ability to pivot quickly, based on the needs of the business and current trends. The second most valuable lesson is to observe the competition and listen to your customer base.

If I could tell my younger self anything, it would be to listen to God and my intuition and bet on myself. You and I are the masters of our dreams and we can accomplish anything that we desire to. There is no dream that is too big!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to a Dallas Mavericks game. Although I know absolutely nothing about sports, I enjoy the energy at the games.

I would set up a picnic, bank side at Lake Ray Hubbard. We would reflect on life and all of our life plans and how to execute them.

We would also attend any events that had live music.

All my friends know that I love dresses so they would definitely have to endure a few hours of me asking their opinions while I shop online. lol

I would take them to eat pineapple curry and every appetizer on the menu at Zennas in Richardson, Hall’s Chicken in Oak Cliff on Lancaster Road for a 4 piece wing basket and large Kool-aid, Bread Zeppelin in Downtown Dallas for the Atlantis salad, minus the cucumbers, Burger Street in Mesquite for a #1 with an extra slice of cheese, hold the ketchup, a lamb gyro from the Greek Lovers food truck at Klyde Warren Park.

As you can see, we would do more eating than anything. lol

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have so many shoutouts to give.

My first shoutout goes out to God. NONE of this would be possible without him.

I have so many people around me that have encouraged and supported me in my journey. I will do my best to not forget anyone.

I would like to dedicate my second shout out to my grandmother, Celia Yancey. I feel so blessed to have had someone that put so much love in our food, growing up. Words cannot explain how great of a cook and baker she was before she passed away.

My third shoutout goes out to my children. To my daughters Ashe’, Briana, Cayla, Daija and my son Nehemiah, I am so honored to be your mom. You all have taught me so much about myself and I appreciate the sacrifices that you all have made during this journey. I love you!

My fourth shoutout goes out to my cousin Charlene, my cousin Cecilia and my Aunt Tracy. Thank you for ALWAYS supporting me and standing in the the gap for me. I appreciate all that you do!

My last but not least shout out, goes out to my extended family. These are the people that love and support me through EVERYTHING! These are the people that I know will show up EVERY TIME. They have heard my joys and my sorrows. They have been my team that has held me accountable.
