We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Huff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nick, how does your business help the community?
Boy howdy! That’s a good question. I create tools for people to navigate the cutting tasks they may encounter. I believe being prepared increases the ease and quality of life. I also provide a product that lets a person express their individuality, and have something no one else does.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My favorite part of knife making is the interaction with my customers. I say all the time that “I don’t make knives, i make relationships” I love meeting new folks and becoming a part of their lives. Doing so increases the quality of my life and makes me truly happy. My specialty is building a knife for someone that includes a part of their life. I have made knives with the cremated remains of loved ones in the handle. I have used wood from a customers family farm. One gentleman sent his late grandfathers brass drivers license which had expired in the early 1950’s. One of the things I am most excited about is the people from all over the world who are interested in what I do. I have sent knives to many different countries and nearly every state in the US. To imagine so many people using my knives from all walks of life in so many different scenarios still blows me away. I have gotten where I am professionally by diligent and dedicated work habits. Not that it came easy. I have learned a lot about myself the last few years, I work hard and it never seems like work… OK, that may not be true. When it is 100 degrees in the Texas summers, it can feel a bit like work!! One of the things that really helped me to overcome the challenge of building a business was finding Gary Vaynerchuk on Instagram. His take on life and business really struck a chord and seemed to speak to me about what i needed, when i needed it. I highly recommend checking him out! My brand Knives Made by Nick is a grass roots operation built on a passion. I get out in my shop every morning at or before 4am. Most mornings I’m up before my alarm goes off. I am literally driven out of bed by a passion to see what the day will bring, and my insatiable desire to build beautiful, useful, unique tools.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I think that the Fort Worth Stockyards are a fantastic place to start. The shops and busting activity have something for everyone. Not to mention the daily cattle drive. Who wouldn’t be impressed with massive longhorns crossing the street twice a day! Where else would you get your cowboy hat? I don’t hang out in bars much, unless my band FTW is playing out, but Lola’s Saloon on 6th is a great club with fantastic night life activities and great live music. One of my favorite places to eat is Alvarado Mexican Restaurant on Davis Blvd. in North Richland Hills. I’ve been a fan of theirs for more than 15 years now. Great food and open 24hrs. A couple of hours digging through all the cool stuff at Omaha’s Surplus is definitely on the agenda! A super cool place to find camping supplies and equipment, clothing, tools, ammo crates and cans. There are so many awesome people in the area! Too many to try and cover them all, but a couple of standouts are, first of all, my bud Danger Dan Hardick.
Dan has a podcast that is on all streaming sources or can be found at dangerdanstalkshop.com To call Dan a motorcycle enthusiast would be a gross understatement. The podcast he does is an interview format with people in the motorcycle industry, people who ride, or just interesting characters that inspire and intrigue Dan. Another person I like to hang out with is my bud Deso, the owner of Virtuoso Tattoo in Hurst Tx. Deso is a fantastic tattooer with a passion for the history and tradition of tattooing. The tattoo shop is a well oiled machine of art, customer service and a fun atmosphere. I think I enjoy these two so much is because they both mirror my desire for a positive attitude and the passion to enjoy life. I know I’m here for a good time, not a long time!!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think obviously my wife has to be recognized as a huge influence in my success! She has always supported my visions and endeavors. From tattooing to playing in a band, riding my chopper all over the world to making knives for a living, she has been in my corner and encouraging me to be the person and artist I am. We have been together for 23 years and I couldn’t imagine life without her!
