We had the good fortune of connecting with Nazia Hossain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nazia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
While starting a business can be demanding, doing so in a field I’m passionate about makes it easier to integrate my work with my personal life and lead to overall satisfaction. As an American-Muslim, I am able to tailor my services to meet the specific needs of my clients, based on my religious and cultural background as well as my expertise. With four children and an active husband, having control over my schedule allows me to balance work commitments with family needs, such as attending school events, sports outings, and managing household responsibilities. Running my own business gives me the freedom to set my own hours, choose the clients I work with, and create a therapeutic environment which aligns with my philosophy and values. By pursuing my professional goals, I am able to set a powerful example for my children about the importance of following my passion and balancing career with family life. Having a supportive husband and network of family and friends played a significant role in my decision. Starting Naz Counseling, PLLC, allowed me to create a legacy and potentially provide for my family in ways that a traditional employment roll may have not.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career is centered around helping individuals, couples, and families navigate their relationships, mental health challenges and life transitions.
My deep connection with our community gives me unique insights into the specific challenges and dynamics faced by my clients. This cultural competence can be particularly comforting and effective for clients seeking a therapist who understands them.
As a wife and mother of four, I’m able to help clients who are navigating family dynamics, parenting challenges, and balancing multiple roles. Clients benefit from my insights on managing stress, maintaining work-life balance, and fostering resilience.
My commitment to tailoring therapy to meet the unique needs of every client sets me apart from my colleagues. Research has shown that therapeutic alliance is a critical factor in order for therapy to work.
Also, adhering to high ethical standards and maintaining a client-centered, non-judgmental approach makes me a trustworthy and reliable therapist.
I have always been inspired by my maternal grandma, Ayesha Sardar. She would take poor women off the streets of Jessore, Bangladesh and teach them how to sew and create embroidery. Once they learned, they were able to sell their work and provide for their families. My grandma was awarded a gold medal by Queen Elizabeth for her services. She was a teacher for Nobel Prize Winner, Dr. Yunus who is in charge of today’s Bangladesh. I hope to carry on her noble work, by helping others going through difficult times in their lives.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I feel like Dallas is all about the food and shopping. Two things I find joy in are good halal eats and fine malls. Things to see in Dallas include the Reunion Tower, Dallas Arboretum, the Sixth Floor at Dealey Plaza, and the Fort Worth Zoo located next to Texas Christian University (where I teach on Mondays!).
North Park, Galleria, and Stonebriar are my favorite malls. There’s plenty of great shops and eateries.
We would have all you can eat Mediterranean food at DiMassi’s, Chinese at Crescent Moon, Thai at Noodle Wave, Korean at Wave Bowl, and biriyani and burgers at Jimmy’s.
I have a new passion for trying out Yemeni teas at local shops: Arwa, DeRa, Sayfani, Haraz. and the new Escape 360.
The weather is hot, but I’d love to catch a Dallas Mavericks or Dallas Cowboys game.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To my incredible husband, thank you for being my rock and my biggest supporter. Your unwavering belief in me has been the backbone of my journey as a wife, mom, therapist and professor.
Balancing our family life with my career has been a challenge, but your understanding, patience and encouragement have made it possible. I couldn’t have achieved this without your love and partnership.
This journey is ours, and I’m grateful to walk it with you. Jazak Allah Khair for everything.
