We had the good fortune of connecting with Moses Ellis Jr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Moses, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process was simple at first I simply wanted to grow a nice looking beard. I had big patches in my beard and couldn’t get them to fill in. I kept cutting it off and growing it back again, I tried a number of beard products, (and they aren’t cheap) and I still couldn’t get that look and feel that I was searching for. So I started doing research on natural oils and butters and gained an understanding of how they work independently and in conjunction with one another. I started doing a few DIYs to create a formula just for me to grow and maintain a healthy beard. Through many trials and errors I finally found the perfect recipe that allowed me to grow & maintain a nice, big, healthy, awesome looking beard! One of my Co workers asked me what I used on my beard one day at work because he was struggling with the same issues. I gave him a batch of my personal diy beard products and he loved them and raved about them so much that he wanted to pay me to continue providing it to him. I did a trial run and made about 10 batches of products posted on Facebook to see if anyone would be interested, my comment, likes, shares, & inbox blew up I sold out in a day. After that I began to really put some thought and investment into making this a business & the rest is history!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a former professional athlete I played football at Prairie View A & M University for 4 years, I was an All American at the cornerback position. I later went on to play arena football in Colorado then South Dakota before suffering an injury to my knee. After returning home I started getting more involved in my church and growing my faith in Christ. I began teaching a Sunday School class for the Teenagers before accepting my call as a preacher in 2015. I’m now the youth minister at my church I have the joy and honor of teaching our youth the word of God on their level, aiding in building their understanding and faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It’s so fitting because God blessed me to be a father of eight beautiful children, that’s not a typo I said EIGHT! LOL I absolutely love being a father it is my calling and truly the highlight of my life.
I currently work for a Saas (Software As A Service) company and ironically we support small business owners, with our customer relationship management platform that enables business owners to stay connected with their current clients and potential leads, while helping them to become for organized. We also ensure that small business owners have an online presence helping them to build their company’s brand. I’m a manager in the Customer Success department I led a team of individuals who’s responsible with ensuring that our small business owners are successful in maximizing all of the tools at their disposal by brainstorming with them to develop a tailored game plan for business growth and success. I practically interact with small business owners everyday and I know how to relate to their experience on a first hand basis which enables me to be more effective in partnering with them in achieving their goals. One of the keys to a successful business is customer service, people remember experiences, people will always remember how you treat them and how you make them feel. It doesn’t matter how great your products and services are if your customer service is lacking clients will walk out of the back door. This has truly helped me as a business owner, I pride myself on great customer service.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Interesting question, I’m not really that outgoing as far as activities most of my time and activities are centered around my children so all I can think of is kids things lol. But I really do enjoy live bands, I don’t have a particular place in the city but I’d surely find a few that week to hang out with a friend. I do enjoy a nice lowkey lounge type of environment. I’m a really chill person so no big adventures here lol. I love a good steak so any where I can get a good ribeye cooked medium would be just fine with me.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I first want to thank my beautiful wife Ashley, for encouraging, supporting & partnering me on this journey! She and our children were the testers of all the products in the beginning that helped us to develop the perfect formula. I would also like to recognize all of our supporters, including my Church Family Grace Tabernacle Missionary Bapticostal Church led by our Pastor Roy Elton Brackins. They have been a tremendous support to the growth of our business. During the Pandemic my Pastor begin to highlight all of the entrepreneurs that we have in our congregation in a small business spotlight segment during worship, which led to more followers and supporters of the business. My church family faithfully supports and spreads the word about our business every chance they get. They are not only great evangelist for Jesus Christ but also for our Blessed Beard & Naturally Hair care business as well. I can’t thank them enough!
