We had the good fortune of connecting with Monika Heaton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monika, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was working at a start-up company in California, and while I was on maternity leave, the company closed its doors. Paychecks stopped coming and for the first time since I was 16 years old I found myself without a job. I didn’t want to go back to corporate America as I wanted the freedom to take time off from work if my daughter was ill or had a school play. It was at that point that I decided to start my own tax and bookkeeping firm. That was 20 years ago and I never once regretted that decision.

What should our readers know about your business?
Decision Financial is your concierge tax firm. We cater our services to the needs of your business. We offer tax preparation, bookkeeping, payroll processing, IRS representation, and proactive tax planning. What truly sets us apart from others is that we care about our clients. We take the time to learn about their business, ask them where they see themselves in the future, and then cater a proactive tax plan to help them achieve their goals and maximize their tax benefits. I got where I am today business-wise by sheer faith! It wasn’t always easy. When I started my business 20 years ago, I didn’t know how to market or network, all I knew was how to prepare taxes. I made a lot of mistakes along the way, but I never thought them to be negative. These mistakes helped me grow. I was blessed to have met some amazing fellow business professionals that have helped guide me in the right direction.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take her to Ft. Worth Stockyards to see the cattle drive and enjoy all the history it has to offer. Of course, Billy Bob’s for the nightlife. I would take her to Kimball Museum, the Ft. Worth Zoo, and the botanical gardens. We would spend a day shopping in Southlake Town Square and eat lunch at Moxi’s Grill and for dinner in Southlake, we would eat at Del Frisco’s. A trip to Dallas is also a must! We would go see the Dallas Museum of Modern Art and then eat sushi at Uchi. Then a day trip to Austin to tour the capital, see the waterfalls, possibly go paddle boarding, and then have dinner at La Barbecue. Lastly, we would spend a night Fredericksburg, drinking wine and enjoying the beauty it has to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother deserves all the credit. She was my harshest critic, yet my biggest fan. If it wasn’t for her helping me with my daughter, I wouldn’t have been able to grow this business, I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for her.
